Hello,

I'm taking me 2.5 N/A 90 on a good hours drive up the A1 towards Durham tomorrow and considering that this will be the fist "higher speed" stretch I have done, I would really appreciate a couple of tips from the experts :)

1) The air filter box doesn't clip down. The clips just don't seem to push on the casing or lock it into place, thus it rattles, and allows air into the box from underneath. Will this effect performance?

2) I'm slowly getting the hang of lifting my right foot, but sometimes I need that extra bit of power, especially in 5th. When I change into 5th she slows right down, and I think it's partly because I don't dare to put my foot down and watch my diesel evaporate. Should I go by how far my foot is down, or by when the engine sounds like it is no longer increasing revs and burning the diesel that it's sucking in?

That's everything I think!
Thanks in advance for any feedback and wish me luck!

My air filter box has got knackered clips too. I've just wound some insulating tape round the whole thing for the time being, it's stopped the rattling. As for taking me foot off the gas, I only do that if I'm planning on stopping, might not get where I'm going same day otherwise:D

Thanks Hughesy

I was planning on winding some masking tape around it, but insulating tape seems like a better idea (masking tape isn't sticky enough). I will also make sure that I use my foot!

Just out of interest, is that yellow landy in your avatar your N/A?

It's a DIESEL.

Therefore the more AIR goes in to it, the better it goes. Turbos stuff in about TWICE as much air as an engine can suck.

The air filter (so called) is many things, including

1. silencer of intake noises - take the hose off, run it and listen. LOUD.

2. stopper of birds, bees, rocks, nuts, and bolts etc entering engine.
,
3. convenient way to prevent water splashes going in and snapping rods.

4. a long way last in our climate, to filter air.

The element will choke, eventually, and it will cut down the air going in. If you suspect this, take out the element and go for a run. If she goes like **** off a shovel dump the element, buy and fit a new one.

Thank you sir,

which part is the element?

You're winding me up, right?

If not, Holy Smoke ...........

It's the tan coloured wiggly paper drum thing in the middle.
About the size of a loaf of bread but with steel ends.

It probably needs a wing-nut taken off to get the element out.

BEWARE!

It will be a BIG DISASTER if the wingnut / washer / anything else gets sucked into the engine. This things sucks ten times harder than Monica Lewinski even dreamed about. NEVER work on the air filter while the engine is running.

oh bloody hell! I thought you were on about an element in the engine there for one minute! I would have understood if you'd said filter ;) I'll remember that now! Learn something new everyday. It's pristine white and brand new just for reference

Thanks Hughesy

No mate that ones got a turbo diesel in. I think a 2.5n/a would struggle to drag those wheels up hills and the power steering makes a hell of a difference too. My n/a is in a bog standard 110 truck cab which goes surprisingly well really:)

Well I got here safe and sound, the journey was a little slow (average 55mph) and the slightest hills / up hill stretches really slowed her down. She's bloody well drunk a lot of diesel as well. When I stopped and the engine idled, it kept loosing revs in a pattern (ie. rev rev, whiir, rev rev, whiir) - is this a bad thing? She's not dripping as much oil as she has been doing (probs cos there's none left!). I have just taken my uncle out for a quick spin, and she started up, without the stange idling sound and drove flawlessly but she did whiir again when I stopped.

Fun,fun
