Driven across Russia, Mongolia, Kazakstan, and Europe... amazing adventure and highly recommended.

now... shall i bring the car into the UK?

it's currently in the netherlands, resting, and it's legality of being driven in europe runs out in May. I either sell it (Sensible - but will break my heart), or import it into the UK.

Tax isn't an issue as I've owned the car abroad for a number of years so I won't have to pay. MOT could be an issue, but then that's just the way it always is.

The big question is insurance. I've spoken to some companies about insuring the car and the numbers that are coming back are TERRIFYING! As it's a 1985, left hand drive, new engine, modified body, updated suspension & breaks, as well as a load of other things. the prices are well over £5000!!!

Does anyone know of a good company to call on this front? It's a bit of an unusual car.

Thanks in advance.

p.s. I'm writing up the trip (photos and all) and will post on the forum when done.

is this because you have 0ncb in the uk ?

mines got everything bar the lhd on an 87 plate.... its 230 quid inc breakdown coverage age 29.

speak with the good folks over at heritage insurance . you can only phone them !

Peter James insurance are quite good
200tdi 90 and series 2 unlimited miles breakdown cover etc 212 quid for the pair.

Best to go through a specialist insurer as the usual car insurance firms tend to get a bit lost when you add up all the non-standard things. Land Rover specialists or classic car insurers tend to understand these things a bit more and will often give you a better price. Best to call them and explain exactly what it is you're insuring- particularly as you don't have a UK registration yet.

I'm with Adrian Flux, and there's a representative from them resident on these forums :)

Not always. It's a risk though. my Mate crashed his Disco into another car, then they checked. They didn't cancel his insurance but they did knock off a fair bit on what he would have got to repair it. mainly because he has after market brakes and the master cylinder died, as it wasn't OEM they got a bit sniffy with him. They didn't care about his snorkel or suspension though, so maybe some companies don't worry about some mods. They did pay for repairs to the person he hit.
If I had a low value Landy I'd lie my backside off to get a discount though, if it's a decent one then maybe not, too risky as you say.

dear lord.

the insurance will always pay out to the third party in an at fault accident.

how ever if the accident was deemed to be in a vehicle that they did not insure the risk for (ie modified and you dont tell them) then legally you are liable and they can come after you personally for the value of the third party claims......

its not 1979 anymore dont be stupid.

No point in paying for insurance if you give the insurance company a "get out of jail free" card.

Its not like they want to be paying out at all. Mow down a que of primary earners at a buss stop, and they'll be over your motor with a fine tooth comb...

Back to original question - do ALL you can to bring it home, you'll never forgive yourself if you sell it after all those miles together. I've had good and bad quotes from both Flux and Heritage - just keep shopping around. Good luck,

Mail the Adrian flux rep on here, and see what he can do.

Insurance generally becomes cheaper on unusual situations, when you get a human who wants to understand the situation, rather than just press buttons on the computer...

ok - done.

I will hit Adrian flux and Heritage tomorrow. Thanks for the numbers... good to know it's do-able for a reasonable price.

I couldn't forgive myself for selling it, but it's simply a matter of time running out and a limited amount of money. Driving 25,000 miles and being on the road for months dented the wallet a bit.

cheers guys! Fingers crossed it will be leaving a daily puddle of oil by my front door soon.

Dont call adrian flux - youll just get a call centre, and they will quote you more than everyone else - theyre (in my experience) pretty uncompetitive over the phone.

Mail the chap here, and youll (hopefully) get a sensible number.

note:

i have both our 101 and our 110 insured with adrian flux. on both occasions, i called them up, got foolish numbers, but the chap here sorted out sensible quotes on both, via email (well, forum pm)

I sent a very similar 110 LHD overland spec back from Dubai to the UK about 4 years ago. Getting insurance was an arse but I am with Sureterm direct on a specialist landy plan and limited mileage 300 and something quid. Its an arse and they are a pain to deal with but once you have done it once renewal is easy. I remember i had to insure it on the chassis number initially until I got a UK reg no.

I think I recognise you rlandy. Was it in Dubai a few years ago. Seem to remember it being in AAA Rashidiya having some wiring done.

Who is the Adrian Flux guy on here? I am with them and my renewal is due next week.
They have quoted me £300 but Direct Line have come back with £201.
I'd rather stay with Adrian Flux because they can do Agreed Value for an extra £15.

Yup thats the one. I picked it up from someone in Dubai who had never found a chance to use it. He was kitting it out for expedition and it had basically driven round town only. I moved it to Oman and had it there for about 3 years. I almost completely re-did the wiring when I got it. It was a right mess!
