Long cranking at start

Hi,
Hope everyone is well.
I got my first freelander 1 2.0l td4 last week. The only issue so far I’m having is starting the car. Sometimes it will start straight up on the go and sometimes it will crank crank crank then start up little white smoke after start up then runs fine no smoke at all, no lights or no power loss. I changed the fuel filter the other day and emptied the water separator. The car started straight up first time for about a day after I changed them no problems. Now It’s going back to cranking cranking cranking then start up. If it starts cranking and cranking then I turn it off then try again it starts up straight away. I do wait for the glow plug light to come on but only really comes on in the morning and starts first time after the glow plug light goes out. Sorry this is a long one, but if you can help me out I really appreciate it.

Hello and welcome
check the glow plugs are working.

I had the same problem in the wife's old rover 75. I couldn't be arsed to fix it cos it was one of those cars where one problem leads to another, we just got used to turning the ignition on for a few seconds, turning it off again, back on again for a couple of seconds and she fired up ok. Probably needed new glow plugs.
