Hello all,

I am lee and new to this forum.

I have just purchased a vintage lolode trailer chassis and I believe it is possibly a land rover item or military piece of kit I wondered if anybody could identify it.

Pictures below.

I found another one I believe very similar on Bonham's auctions that sold 2 years ago and was custom made for the land rover management Spencer Wilks as a bespoke item in 1965.

From what I can see on the web lolode were a company based in Bedford in the postwar period.

They did all sorts of applications but I am really interested in the land rover connection.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Lee

If this was military pending on age have look for Crowfoot symbol stamped and numbers. Are the tyres marked Avon. Same again for Crowfoot on the hubs.

Ere that's disgusting should be ashamed of yourself. See the moderator

Well thanks for all you posts lads.

Nice not to just be ignored as a FNG.

Well I have been busy.....
Photos below...

Wire brushed, the whole chassis, it's absolutely solid!
Massive c section steels and all the welds in perfect condition, as somebody said earlier, made to last.
Not bad considering this thing was probably manufactured in the mid 60s.

Also found this information online from a Bonham's auction in 2020 about the same item sale.
Please note this is not my actual item but the same nevertheless.

1970 LO LODE LANDROVER SERIES 1-2-3 - DEFENDER - WILKS FAMILY OW FOR SALE
1965 Lo Lode Trailer

As all Land Rover enthusiasts appreciate, the Wilks brothers knew a great deal not only about engineering, but also good design and practicality.

Thus, when Spencer Wilks was looking for a suitable trailer in the mid 1960’s to tow and use behind his Series IIa on his farm in Scotland (GXC 639C which has now forms part of the JLR collection) he only wanted the best.

He therefore contacted Bedford based trailer manufacturer Simplex LoLode and, working collaboratively, (an initial hand drawn sketch remains) a bespoke trailer was uniquely built for him in 1965.

Clearly he was pleased with the tailer, it remained with the Wilks family for some 55 years, until being offered for sale in 2020 in need of restoration.

As can be seen from the photographs, light restoration has now been completed inc a new quality wooden floor and period type tyres. However, time has been taken to retain its original patina. Brakes and wheel bearings have been stripped , cleaned and adjusted. So now the trailer is offered for sale not only ready for use as a practical accessory behind any Land Rover, but also a fascinating piece of Land Rover / Wilks history.

The internal size of the trailer is 88" long x 47" wide. Also included in the sale is the original hitch used on GXC a perfect companion to the trailer.
