Hello,

Took the plunge last week and satisfied the mid life crisis - 2000 Defender 110 CSW TD5. Took me a while to find, and I can't believe what some people are trying to sell with the excuse "it's an old Land Rover - what do you expect!"
Anyhow, manage to find something reasonable , with a FSH, and loads of documentation filed in year dates back to 2004. Original service book and manual as well.

All look reasonable underneath - will need a new rear door at some point and eventually the other doors as they're showing some signs of tin worm.

Will be planning to get my hands dirty progressively, but need some help to start with.
Have 2 problems which need looking at sooner rather than later:
1. Small oil leak, the source of which I have yet to identify, but is dripping off the bottom of the bell housing. Previous MOT has identified small leak in turbo oil return pipe, so wonder if this is the culprit?
2. Can't engage diff lock - I have pulled up the gaiter and checked that the foam and rubber are not impinging on the lever, but nothing obvious.
3. Slightly notchy gear change between 1-2 and 2-3. Not sure if this is normal or a sign of something else.

Any recommendations for independent specialists in the Solihull area would be greatly received. There are loads of people on google search within my area, mostly with good reviews, but a personal recommendation would be much preferred.

Cheers all.

Matt

Hi and welcome!

The difflock issue could be something as simple as seized linkages due to lack of use. The gearchange on a Landy isn’t like that on a car but an oil change on the gearbox and replacing with synthetic oil will likely help.

And buy lots of security measures too. They’re very popular with thieves.
