hi everyone
can anyone give me any ideas what this is.
i have a freelander ES 1800cc y reg, ONLY when i am reversing i get this very load whining noise seems to come from somewhere middle to front of car its hard to tell really.
it also feels a little tight so i have to give it a bit more revs reversing.
im not sure whether it the gearbox or the transfer box, is there an easyway i could find out for definate before i dive into my pockets and buy the wrong part
many thx,

Most cars with manual gearboxes whine in reverse. The reason is that reverse is driven through straight cut spur gears, all other gears have helical teeth which reduce noise.

How many miles on the clock? Is the oil level Ok?

Has the whine always been there or has it increased dramatically recently? If the former then its probably Ok to continue using it. If the latter then check the oil level to see that you haven't run low, then drain the gearbox and check for metallic particles in the oil to check for gear or bearing damage.

hi vic
the mileage is 56000, oil levels all ok and the noise has been a gradually getting louder over time, but as you say it does make a whining noise like all cars reversing but mines special it makes a very loud whining noise,
