Hi,

I am looking for a new vehicle to tow the caravan and transport a race bike for next year. I do not like doing the journey in a Van and am looking for something with a bit more comfort and go. As I will only be using it 8 times a year MPG is not that important.

I like the idea of a Range Rover for comfort and not getting stuck towing a caravan off a field in a soggy race paddock,but the limiting factor will be if my little 2 stroke 250cc bike will fit in the back. Lots of people use people carriers and the like with no problems as they are very light in race trim.

I just wondered if anyone knew the size of the back with the seats down?
The bike is just under 2M long and 1.2M high, if a Range Rover can be found with that kind of load space then my mind is made up :)

I believe there was a LWB version out around 93-95 ish?

lwb is a classic LSE. Have you had a look at disco's as well?Some people call them bread vans cos of there shape and there are commerical versions of the disco.However that said if mpg int a problem get yerself a v8 and you love it!
 
It is the V8 thing which got me thinking about it.

For the same sort of money as a scabby Transit I could be sitting on plush leather with air con - if only I can find a way of getting the bike to fit in. :D

I am not too bad with a set of spanners either so would have no real issues keeping a Range Rover well serviced. My other car is an old but looked after 95 BMW 525iSe with over 220,000 miles on the clock and is used daily with on major breakdowns ever! It may only be worth £500 now but is still a pleasure to drive, even at 20mpg. What I loose in petrol I make up for in low depreciation and servicing costs, no cambelt to change, no valve adjustment needed etc...
 
dont think a bike would fit in the back upright.
will fit on the back with a towbar bike rack though ;)

Stick the bike on a rack bolted to the towbar. I used to carry an Yamaha XT550 while I towed a caravan, went all over Europe with no problems at all. Saves messing up the inside of the RR as well as keeping the stink of petrol out as well.
 
The rack on the tow bar sounds do-able.

It is only a little TZR250 so weighs about 100KG in race form. Does anyone have an idea of the nose weight allowed on a tow bar on a Range Rover?

weight will be no problem .
you may have to get and adapter made , as most dont fit on swan-neck type towbars . they normally fit buy bolting between the towball and the bracket .
theres some really cool ones over here , that lower and lift the bike with ratchetting foot levers etc. but i'd just get a "lift on" one as there less than 100 quids .
police started taking an interest in them though , so you'll need to buy a light/plate board too .

It's got to weigh less than an XT550 + caravan nose weight, so you should be OK. Regarding a swan-neck tow ball, the OEM fit ones were like that, but most RR seem to have aftermarket tow bars the majority of which are the standard bolt-on type so no worries there.
