Load of oil by nearside front tyre

if you struggle to find it, clean everything off and give it all a light dusting of white spray paint (where you think it is) the leak will soon stand out

it tasted minerally not bitterly...............must be oil.

I took it to my local garage for them to have a looksee, he said he doesn't do landrovers but had a look on ramp and could see oil dripping, but didn't know where from !!.,,,,,so it's take things off until the obvious appears.

Job doesn't seem too difficult, just messy, but might as well replace all seals as I'm in there.

** UPDATE **

Ok, bought a pair of axle stands and borrowed a trolley jack from my brother.

Using Busters post as a guide.............

Wheel off revealing puddle of oil all over floor

got as far as removing brake callipers and getting to Big Wheel nut.

that's as far as I got. Need to buy more tools. (big box spanner)

Numpty questions coming up.....

1. looking at the brake callipers, there seems to be remains of springs or something on one of the pins........are they necessary, do I need to get some ?

2. there are several swivel ball service kits to choose from, will it become obvious as to the one I want as I remove more bits?

the springs arnt necessary no,

make sure the swivel ball kit is for your landy, as there will be 24spline and 10 spline kits possibly abs not sure on differences

*** UPDATE 2 ***

Big Box Spanner arrived.......£6 quid odd from ebay. :)

SO this is what I done today.........

undone big nut and tab..It was a bit loose !!!

removed axle stub.......think that's wot it's called !

removed drive shaft.

unable to take bottom pin out cos its a torx screw (more tools to buy :( )

so had to get complete unit off.......

THESE WERE BASTARDS TO UNDOO !!!!!!

while getting seal off.......bits of spring and pins everywhere !!

noticed split rubber on this, so that's more bits on the shopping list.

anyways managed to remove ball & housing ......... bit of pitting !!

also lots of pins in axle stub.

So, shopping list gets bigger :( , I might as well replace wheel bearing as everything is apart.

Will post rebuild update when I start doing it.

There is some sticky fluid you can buy from Lucas for the swivels, I think its just called Hub oil its syruppy but stops and prevents leaks and seems to lubricate better than the normal oil. I think it operates better at higher temps incase u go off roading. Just got the link off ebay but this is the stuff LUCAS HUB OIL RANGEROVER LANDROVER SWIVEL / HUB STOPS LEAK GREASE | eBay

thats all very well, untinn you somehow get water in there, then have to strip everything to clean it out, whereas with oil you just flush it thru :):fencing:

The stuff should protect everything much better if water does get in but its a very good point, must be a nightmare to get rid of the stuff if you have do a strip down.

thats not a numpty question, if you don't know it's best to ask.
if you look under the bonnet there should be a large ally block with a lot of brake pipes going to it. if it's not thier you have no abs. to be sure, just take a couple of pics of the engine bay and we should be able to tell from that. and well done on the repairs so far.considering your no machanic you are doing rather well.

ron.

Thanks Ron,

Yes , I am chuffed with what I've done so far......

I haven't seen anything with lots of pipes attached. I'll get some piccies from under bonnet later in week.

regards

Chris

Those special bolts that were a bastad to undo did you notice the blue stuff ? I think thats the culprit its frigging extra special loctite, but if you heat it up a bit it softens and they undo ok, too late for you of course!

Fwiw i reckon you will have to fill the swivels with the grease which is readily available from paddocks etc as it became std on later cars and yr balls are pitted so oil will leak out, ive kept to oil myself maybe try oil and if it leaks drain and fit grease?
