Having served in the Royal Engineers, Light Infantry and Royal Green Jackets
from 1974 to 1989 I don't EVER remember seeing an air-portable with a
hardtop.......

Did you see any with K&N filters or parabolic springs?

I'm not sure what your point is.

Airportables (or lightweights) were only made (AFAIK) for the MOD

We've been sussed Tim, you could have gone and bought one of them
surplus MOD lightweights instead of making your own inflatable one. I
just >knew< I'd seen them somewhere else.

Oh well, might as well get rid of this now....

I've seen a few, still in military cammo, at a dealers. They had 24v
electrics and the arctic heater system, with the batteries moved to
boxes at the back of the rear wheel arches, with access from inside.

My guess is Royal Marines.

The hardtop seemed to be the standard Series III type.

No, they, like the 101, were only made for the military market - the
MOD being but one customer. Not sure why you think they're all 'soft
tops' though, based purely upon never actually having seen one.

If you read the book about the Lightweight, it does show pictures of
some with hardtops.

but that's another story.

actually, strictly, it's not a lightweight. weighs almost exactly the same
as the equivalent standard vehicle, AIUI. mainly, it's narrower and thus
fits in the aeroplane.

Well, it is 'a lightweight'. It is not, per se, lightweight.

It is a lightweight when stripped down. It was designed so that things
like doors could be got off in a hurry, so it would be light enough
to be carried by a Wessex 3 helicopter. The size was dictated by being
able to get two on an Argosy aircraft. When it was delvered the Wessex
3 had been relaced by the Wessex 5, which could lift a standard LR,
and the Argosy had been replaced by the Hercules. What joy......

Such underpowered helicopters and slim aircraft the Russkis and there
Antonovs would never have put up with that. You wanna shift sommat bulky get
an Antonov (so long as it does not fall apart in mid flight)

Yeah - but could a mere mortal handle such a fine beast?

You're confusing "doesn't fit" with "falls off randomly"

Not this one I'm afraid! I'd have to deal with another fine beast in
full flight if I did...

I reckon the funds from the 101 will just about cover the work I want
to do on Stig and a couple of pieces of fine glassware...
