Hi, i have a 1976 lightweight which currently has a 2.25 petrol engine, i would like to fit a diesel engine of some type, either the 2.25 diesel or the 200tdi, has anybody ever done this? and whats involved? many thanks

I have fitted well nearly, the 300 tdi which is a lot of work, forget it if your not a veteran car basher.
Sticking to the vintage, a sherpa n/a diesel will fit and its very similar to the landy diesel.
The 200 tdi is the best choice, without the turbo, it fits the original mounts, and with a couple of minor mods fits the series 'box, it also works with the series rad, you can do the transplant in a weekend, theres no welding required and you'll have more balls from the 200tdi than the petrol.
Do a search for 200tdi or 200di in a series, theres loads of info on it, and a few of us have done it.

200 tdi is the way to go. You could easily spend as much money making a 2 1/4 diesel engine run as well as those engines can, as you would buying a good used 200 tdi. 200Tdis are great engines and will make a series Land-Rover much more useable, whereas the 2 1/4 diesel engines run pretty rough and are not very economical. If you want an easy conversion and are concerned about overstressing your transmission then fit without the turbo as per the glencoyne method. If you've got the time, patience and skills then fitting the engine with the turbo, intercooler and 200tdi radiator is well worth the effort. Some links:

i know its a bit of an old tread now but i stuck a 2.5td in mine... went in easy... the bulkhead needed a bit of fetteling and the exhaust too but apart from that it was a cake walk... has a lil bit more grunt now, doesn't ever stress any of the drive train and the engine was peanuts to buy... (compared to a 200 tdi)
