I have just picked up a 1997 Discovery 300Tdi ES Auto that has a couple of problems I need to get sorted. One is that my drivers door has dropped and there seems to be a problem with the top hinge. Where it's attached to the door there are 3 torx screws holding it in place, but there is movement on it. However, the torx screws seem tight! The question is, are there 3 nuts on the inside of the door that can be tightened, or is it just the torx screws that hold it in place?

The second thing is, I have a brake light/rear light that isn't working despite changing the bulb. The reverse lights and the winkers operate in the same cluster so it seems that it's just the brake/rear light part of it that is faulty. Is this easy to remedy, and is it easy to actually remove the cluster completely to get a better look at it. The rear boot seat is in the way and access is really tight. I'd thought about undoing the torx screws that hold the upper part of the seat in place and dropping it down for better access, but one of the screws is that tight I can't shift it. Any advice would be gratefully received!

Access to the rear lights is a pain in the arse, but can be done with a medium amount of cussing, you've ruled out an earth issue, probably just a corroded lamp holder/ contacts but could possibly be broken wiring. Need to get your multimeter out!

You can buy the door hinges relatively cheaply for the disco, or get some of a rear passenger door from a disco at the scrappy, as they are usually good as new :)

Thanks for the reply. It's taken me all afternoon, but managed to sort the lights. It was a poor connection. The bulb holder had bits and bobs of corrosion all over it.

As for the hinge, I don't think there is a problem with the hinge itself, it's where it's screwed into the door that seems loose. That's why I was asking if there are nuts within the door frame that tighten onto those 3 torx screws. If there are then I'm assuming it has just come loose and needs tightening up, if not, then I don't know what to do about it!
