Hello as title really, i had a light noise from what i first thought was the tensioner/water pump/alt area, i have since replaced cambelt kit. Noise now seams louder if anything even with the auxiliary belt removed. I have tried to pin point the noise with no real joy although definitley seams louder from directly under the front of sump.
I have tried to retard the timing which seamed to help as i wondered if it was diesel knock? (Although not really sure what this sounds like)

Im new to discoverys and this is my first diesel engine so not sure of all these noises!

Any help much appreciated thanks :)

Ok this doesnt seam to be working either! Any ideas how i can get this to upload? Not too great with tecnology

Yeah it comes up on the little box but doesnt seam to get any further.. Its saying video does not have an allowed extension?

Have you actually had the valve cover off and checked the valve clearances yet? Could be a valve cap has punched through, or possibly a rocker shaft failure? Cover off and have a good look / wiggle and clearance check to start with, wont take long and doesn't cost anything but can eliminate a few potential causes.

Yep had the cover off replaced all of the caps and adjusted clearances to 0.20mm, fitted new gasket too. Also changed the exhaust manifold gasket as this had split. I had a noise before i changed the cam-belt but it was more of a wur and seamed to come from tensioner/pulley area. Since doing the belt i seam to have a more tappy/rattly sound. I have been over the engine with a screwdriver to the ear to see if i could tell where it was coming from but no joy, it seams louder if im layed under the front of the sump but screwdriver all around that area showd nothing. With desiel knock is it more of a metalic sound like i have? Wondering if i retard the fip timing it may be the answer? Although i guess should be fine as its set to the book.

I had a very similar noise, although mine was intermittent, for some reason.

Only thing I have changed is the vac pump because it failed. I have not noticed it since.

Cheers

Hmm my vac pump is leaking oil which was next on the list to fix, i didnt want to replace as didnt seam loud but if noise persists i shall have to try a new unit. Think its strange the noise has only appeared since doing belt

Cheers

Yep made this to get it up nice and tight

I have just noticed my outter crank pulley has a slight wobble to it

Replace it, they can break up after a while ... but you should check other stuff...

Remove serpentine belt ... feel pulley for wobble... they can damage the crankshaft end...

You should check behind timing cover to be sure ...

Ok thanks, ill remove belt feel for play remove pulley and timing case check for crank wear + woodruff keys, seamed to slide on nicely and sit up against inner pulley. I did read about them being bonded with rubber hopefully this is the cause. Ive seen one on ebay from barry4x4 for £62ish apprent o/e quality.. I can imagaine land rover charging a fair whack for a new one?

Cheers

Right pulled it apart again, no play in pulley or shaft when belt removed, removed timing case new belt looks ok woodruff keys dont look too worn ill add some pics.. Shaft seams to have some score marks not sure how normal that is?
Pulley rubbers do have some cracks.

Cheers

Is the tensioner for the aux belt jumping up and down? That might indicate something is snatching.

You can start and idle it for a few seconds from cold with no belt on - no more as there wont be a water pump running. Lets you see if something driven was the noise. Mine sounded like that just before the PAS pump died. It went I am convinced because a new belt was fitted that added more tension and sideload on the bearing that expired...
