Lift Pump leaking oil

I have a 1986 Defender, with a 2.5 ltr n/a, the problem is the lift pump is leaking oil through the vent hole on the underside. The pump is an AC Type H.

Should I just but a self tapping screw in the breather hole.


Fit a new lift pump, I did buy a STC 1190 pump, but it dose not fit correctly.


Can any one tell me the correct part number for the pump.


Any advice welcome. Steve.

I know this is an old thread, but I have the same issue. I assume I need to put a new pump on, but the STC1190 is not a good fit. Any suggestions?

Oil from vent does mean a new pump. Some live with it if it's not bad, but if that is leaking it probably means it's a Britpart or failing anyway. Both are an automatic cause for replacement in my book.

It certainly is the correct pump, what is the issue regarding the fit?

The 2.5 NA has a built up section on the block so the pump will fit with just a gasket. If the lift pump lobe on the cam is in the strike position then bear in mind as you seat the pump you will be pushing it against the spring. You can turn the engine over 180deg ish and it will help. Make sure you don't sort of try to hook the arm under the lobe. It must sit so the outer smooth part is being struck.

Thanks for your response. I ordered a new pump. I got a Delphi this time so hoping for better luck. There was a bit of resistance just before fully tightening the nuts. I assumed since the old pump came off and I did not turn it over, that the cam would be in the proper position. Does that sound normal?

Well the pump would come off regardless, the position of the cam lobe would have more of an impact on the ease of fitting the new one.

If the old one sort of sprung off the block then it was probably on cam, if not either the pump spring was knackered or it was indeed off cam. A bit of resistance as long as it doesn't feel too bad isn't an issue, the cam lobe never leaves contact with the lift pump actuator, so there is a little resistance as it bottoms out and takes up the slack.

Thank you Discomania! I just got the new one installed and it went on smoothly...just a slight amount or resistance after I tighten the nuts. No oil leaking and she fired right up. I have a bit of white smoke I have been watching so I'm off to check my injectors. The engine was overhauled 2 years ago, but I don't think the injectors were replaced or cleaned. I have just a bit of a knock even after the engine is warm so I've decided to replace the injectors. Any particular brands you like?
