Lift or spacers?

It depends on what's stopping them from fitting?
If it's the tyre fouling the suspension, then a lift isn't going to help.
If the tyres are hitting the bodywork, then a lift will help.
I'm guessing it's a pre 2001 model, which have a different wheel offset to the later vehicles. This difference in wheel offset will affect the ability to take larger diameter tyres, of which your 205/80/16 are about as big as is possible without needing some form of non standard modification.

Large spacers or later wheels and shim spacers, don't forget to tell your insurance company.

So i'm going to need wheels from a 2001+ MY?
Do you know the offset before I cock it up again?
You might as well fit 25mm spacers to the wheels you already have.

3" lift - I don't even think that is possible without building a new chassis!

That's an awful lot of work and completely unnecessary for a few mm of extra clearance.
