hi can any1 tell me what lift kit to buy for my 90 an how to go about fitting them it would be a great help thanks.
 
hi gman can u tell me what kit to buy in more plain terms as wha u have wrote i dont understand ?? also are lift kits hard to fit on your own?
 
right i will not tell you what one to get as only you can make that decision bassed on price etc,

the kits themselves are pretty simple to fit as long as you have basic mechanical knowledge and the correct tools, if you are unsure get someone who is proficient to help/guide you

what is your budget for your suspension? then i will give you a recommendation on what I would get for that money

For £200 I think I'd use lower shock mounts and dislocation cones at rear, front lowered turrets, HD clamps for the springs and extend the brake lines for the extra articulation. It's not really enough to do a decent lift, so get the basics sorted ready for when you can afford other stuff.

OTOH I've known people fit cheap shocks and springs (Britpart etc from Paddocks) and not have many problems .. just that they were replaced when other bits were needed.

Personally I'd suggest the suspension 'gained' from £200 would be better gained by buying larger diameter tyres ... ;)
 
alright paul i already have huge kumho tyres round nice alloys on they are more than wide enough tyres so if i go to my local LR supermarket what would i ask for ? also iam a joiner do you think i could get my head round doing the work myself ?? thanks
 
What size tyres? Wider don't help ground clearance at all ...
 
just remember that a lift kit wont give your diffs any more clearance,it just lifts the body not the axles.as was said earlier,bigger tyres will give your axles slightly more clearance.
 
but to do a 2" lift correctly you will also need:
castor corrected radius arms
cranked trailing arms
extended brake hoses


you would be better going for something like
dislocation cones
+2" extended shocks
extended brake hoses


and some protection

steering guard
diff guards

true,also,wouldnt you need Td5 props,with the wider yokes,as the ujs seem to break for fun on the standard ones when youve got a lift?ive got a tired lift with procomps n springs off i dont know what,n I'm thinking of jist replacing it with perfectly capable standard stuff
 
if you go through the Landrover parts catalogue you can do a suspension lift with standard landrover items, my uncle did it on his RR classic, i think it was RR diesel front springs on the rear and police spec springs on the front but don't quote me on that, i remember spending hours trawling billing (back in the day) looking for springs with particular colours on

That's not bad for the money, expect some of the extras such as dislocation cones, braided hoses which could all be added later would round it off nicely. :)

I would speak to Gwyn Lewis at GwynLewis4x4 Most kits and parts in the market are copies of his stuff.

However question is do you really want a lift or do you need more articulation. Lift gives better approach, departure and breakover. But a lot of kits come with standard shocks and +50mm springs. This is what you find for your cheap money.

I would start with longer shocks and then get springs later if you need them. Most people go for a lift for looks or to run bigger tyres ( again for looks). In most cases more articulation if far better, you don't get cross axled as much.

The Terrafirma +2" shocks are good value for money as they have thinker shafts than the likes of Procomp and BritPart.

As I said speak to Gwyn he hadsome plus 2 Terrafirma shocks in the other week, most people are out of stock.

By the way think carefully about spring rates, heavy duty gives more lift as spring compresses less with normal load. But if you carry a ton in the back then you will loose that gain. Also if you carry next to nothing in the back the ride will be harsh as you will get little compression in your spring as no weight.
