Leccy Dizzy - Better Coil?

How do, well , the series is running better now that the exhaust manifold is on proper (woo)

We've also bit the dust, and managed to get an electronic dizzy for cheap off fleabay (silly people not realising good old cross compatible British Leyland)

Should i get a more powerful igniton coil? maybe one for a 2.6? instead of a coil for my 2.25, i know i need a new one anyway its shot. But seeing as its a leccy dizzy i though maybe an upgrade might be in the cards.

By the action of goig to an electronic distibutor, you have made the system better in as much as it gives longer current build time to your old coil . The state of tune of the 2.25 will not really benefit from a more powerful spark, more to the point is accurate setting of timing and mixture . an adequate coil is all that is required rather than wasting money on an over spec coil . HTSH:)
 
I've just bought an Electronic Dizzy and coil bundle for my Petrol Series 3, from Simonbbc.com £62 delivered for the set which seemed reasonable...I'll let you know how it goes!
 
You NEED to get the correct coil for an amplified contactorless ignition, presuming that's what you've bought....
The contactorless dizzy will give a much sharper signal to the amp, and that will be boosted by the amp to the coil, and if you use a points coil, then the inductance, intended to 'damp' the shock accross the points when they open, means you get some wiered impedence effects that can make the timing 'wander' a bit, can reduce spark intensity and pottentially hurt the amplifier module........
You did get teh amp, didn't you?
anyway, RR bits are the most easily come by I believe...... but they are balasted and intended to run at six volts so you may have to do some head scratching around wiring diagrams and possibly stick an inline resistor in to drop the voltage.

You can get an idea of compatabilty by the resistance (DC resistance measured by a multimeter), if the amp uses constant energy control then the coil will be about 1.5 ohms or less, 2 to 3 ohms from memory for a standard electronic coil and a bit higher still for a contact coil.
Using the wrong coil on your amp probably wont wreck it, more a case of the spark will be weak, as contact dizzy coils usually have a longer dwell (on time) than electronic jobs.
I have a sports coil and a electronic reluctor type dizzy in the shack you could have cheap, if you want to drive over to preston.
