Leaky Diff...

Hi all

I have a fairly severe leak on my rear diff (110 Defender 200tdi) from the prop shaft end.

I'm guessing there is an oil seal here, but anyone have any experience changing these? Can it be done from the prop end, or does it mean stripping down the diff itself?

Also, can the main diff cover (the one with the filling hole) gasket be changed fairly easily - these are leaky too!!

when you say diff cover gasket, do you have a salisbury rear axle? because the rover axle ones are welded. no gasket.

200Tdi's were salisburys, some later td5's ones wern't.

Ok firstly its a pain to do a salisbury seal. You cannoty do it as per Landy diff kin tight as the bearing need the correct preloading and it has a collapsable coller that has been collapsed in the factory. If you collapse this more you put too much preload on the bearing that could fail and cost you a fortune or you could not do it enough and get an even worse oil leak.


The right way to do it is:

Remove oil,
Remove diff pan,
Remove diff assy (this requires special tools and 4 hands and a crane) no really it needs to be done really carefully you need to spread the axle casing to get the diff assy out) Its probably easier to get a landrover-y small garage to quote you for this.
once the diff assy is removed you need a spring balance and some specs from LR to achieve the correct preloading and therefore resistance on the pinion gear.



The rear diff pan cover is fairly simple to do though. It will require you to drain the oil and clean the mating surfaces so there is no bits of gasket or crap on them. Then get some RTV silicone sealant. It has to be RTV silicone not cheap bathroom silicone or multi purpose ****e. (Don't bother with the gasket theyre useless).
