Leaky axle

Hey everyone, apologies if this has been covered before but i cant seem to find a definative answer from the searches iv done. iv got oil leaking from the hub dust covers on my 200tdi defenders back axle, what i cant get my head round is how changing the seals on the bearings will cure this. is there an oil seal inside the stub axle for the half shaft? or is the only thing keeping the diff oil in the clearance between the splines on the drive flange and the splines on the half shaft (iv cleaned the breather and the breather tube is disconnected for the moment so theres no pressure in the axle as far as i can tell.)

You could have a blown or leaking seal in the stub axle's causing oil to get past the half shaft's mine is doing the same thing but with mine being a drum brake axle i am re-placing the whole axle with a discovery axle to gain disc brakes and will be fully overhauling the axle before i fit it so hopefully i shouldn't have any oil leaks from the hubs

If the leak is only on the outside of the wheel and not in the brake drum ( assuming you have original axle ) then it's likely to be the hub caps ( rubber cones ). Make sure you order genuine ones and smear a bit of atv sealant on the inside. That should cure it.

Bet your axle breather is blocked.

Yeah i cleaned my breather out but it still leaks oil

Cheers for the replies lads. its definately not the breather cos i cleaned it out the other day (although it was fairly clarted) does anybody know what the thread for the banjo bolt is as i might be able to aquire some push fittings from work will get some new hub caps on order anyway and may aswel replace the seals/check bearings while im on with it so will let you know how i get on (when i get round to it :beer2: )

Some early axles did'nt have an internal oil seal that lets nice 80/90 through to lubricate your wheel bearings and as long as your hub cabs are a good fit and don't leak (silicon them) this can only be a good thing !
