Oh, your reconned injectors will come with new washers, make sure the old ones are removed from the engine if they don't stay on the old injectors.

Cool , so I'll do that , drop them in the morning pick them up even and then check the compression.

Yes it definitely a diesel , that's why I had to order online , all the shops around me are selling only petrol ones.
Aparently it go until 70bar which is 1000psi I think so should be plenty :)

I'll post the result here tomorrow evening but I should be hoping for around 400psi per cylinder then ? How much difference is it acceptable ?
It's linear really, I had one cylinder on mine reading 270 the rest were 320-380 and it smoked a bit but not as bad as yours and power was down. If you have 2 low readings on adjacent cylinders its a good indication of head gasket failure. Number 1 cylinder is at the front, give us the readings 1,2,3 and 4.

Yes , about that , 3 came with the washers and one stayed in , any tip to take it out ? Tried fishing and magnet , no luck :/
Magnet won't work because they are copper. I've got a strong piece of wire bent on the end in a sort of hook shape which works well.

Ok will try again the fishing then !
Alright , so what looked like had a problem was 3 and 4 .
Anyway will try all that and post the results tomorrow.
Thanks a lot for your time flossie , I really appreciate

Sooooo,

After getting scammed £50 for someone to tell me that my injectors were good.

i started doing the compression test on the first cylinder,
it showed over 400psi then tried again but forgot to reset it , went over 800psi then broke (little seal inside the reset screw)...
So I am back to square one...

But when I took out the glow plug it looked really oily , is that normal ?
And realised that even after turning the engine off it was still smoking quite a lot ( back of turbo and trough glow plug after removing the tester ).
I think I will bring it to the mechanic asap and then if it is a head gasket will try to do it this week end.
When looking for one , I see there is multiple options ( 1/2 or 3 holes and different thickness )
How do I know which one to take ?

Thanks

You twonk!!
Oily glowplug can just mean it hasn't been working or, of course, the head gasket has gone between an oilway and a bore.
Fit a 3 hole gasket it won't do any harm but use a quality one, elring are good and for what they cost, a new set of head bolts.

the head gasket you have on the engine now will have a small piece sticking out (i forget where) with holes in it. you buy the same number of holes.

Yes, if it's still there (vac pump area iirc) but if the head is skimmed then it's not a good idea. The official way is to measure piston protrusion with a dti, real world just stick a 3 hole on and be done with it. My local Indy only sells 3 hole.

Good , it's ordered already anyway, 3 holes 1.5mm thick and i got a full set with inlet manifold gasket bolts etc as well . Should be all good , hopefully it will arrive by this weekend, will try to pull the car to the mechanic this evening so he can assure me what exactly the problem is.

Our 300tdi was a pig to start, would run fine at low speeds, but just had no power.

I did the following -

lift pump
fuel filter
air filter
injectors
tried to do a compression test, but stuck glow plugs

still no good.

i then went to what my gut feeling was right at the start (got talked into the rest of it) and checked the timing.

it was a bit out, but not much. what i then found, however, was that the key on the crank that mates with the crank sprocket was worn down one side. so, i assume, the crank sprocket moved in and out of time, when driving.

after messing about for a while (it was a pig to get out, then the seals needed doing) the engine starts and runs fine now.

although ive still got a stuck glow plug in the head - i wish id never gone near them!

There is a point where it's best if you just give it to a professional, go home, get a cup of tea, and wait for the bill.

yep exactly, pulled it to a mechanic yesterday, waiting for the verdict with head gasket already arrived.
julianf, thanks for your help, will talk to the mechanic about that , but I doubt as my one doesn't even want to move !

Hi guys,

so just got the landy back after paying £100 for the guy to tell me it is at least the head gasket , he did say that he think the head cracked as well.
So I will do the job myself as he quoted me over £1000 to do it...
any advice before I start ?
I will have to do it in 2 days because I will send the head for a checking and refurb.

Thanks

undo the block drain on lhs of block under first core plug before undoing any head bolt, cracks are generally visible between valves and between injector or heater plug holes and valves, only skim head if it needs it ie its warped or is grooved /pitted

glad your doing it ya self it's not a big job!! Even that price is bloody dear, my local expensive LR specialists only wanted £600 to do a head gasket. Plenty of videos and step by step guides on interweb and on here! I changed mine when I was 19 in an afternoon with no proper mechanical knowledge just common sense! Turner engineering sell new rebuilt cylinder heads should you need one.

I've had the head off another 200 in under an hour once you've done it once it's so so simple to do. Clean the faces, gasket on and takes bit longer putting on as don't want to rush adding degrees onto the head bolts.
