Righto, over the weekend i did a full oil change (bar swivels) and although in the diffs, gearbox and transfer box i only filled until the filler plug (allowing remaining oil to drain) before tightening up the plug, over the last few days ive notices a bit of weaping from around the plugs despite them beign torqued correctly. I did however notice all plugs (the diffs especially - requiring a breaker bar) were over torqued when done up by the previous owner/garage so could the threads be damaged, or is this fairly normal??

They're tapered threads, so if they've been over tightened, yes they could be damaged.
I'd take them out, put a couple of turns of PTFE tape on the threads and re-fit.

Yeah i was reading something about them being tapered the other day on the difflock site, i'll see how it goes for a few days and if the area round the plugs is still a little oily i'll tape them. By the way the g-box filter was full, and i mean jammed full of metal flakes which resembled bits of rusty chassis.. is this 'normal' or should i have reason to be concerned??

Thanks

Depends when it was last cleaned (if ever).
If yer gearbox seems OK, check it again in 6000 miles.

Yeah true, i bought my 90 3 years ago in may, but only passed my test last march so since ive owned it its had no use really, and as im at uni its at home most of the time so ive only drive it a few thou. Although as im driving it more i'll probably just do a full service once a year and see how it goes..

word of caution:....never overtighten the filler plugs..even if they are weaping...or else u'll find out the hard way like i did...the filler plug on the diffs when over tightened.. i guess touches the innards of the moving parts of the diffs.....and one fine day the filler plug pops out tearing the threads.
happenened to me middle o no where....had to plug the hole with a piece o wood and duct tape.
cheers

Yeah i'll take note, ive gotta say the torque setting for the gearbox and transfer box doesnt seem that high so i can see why/how people can easily over tighten them. I'll undo tomorrow and add plumbers tape as suggested and een if it still weaps a little, its prefferable to stripping threads.
