Just been under the landy for the first time in a month stopping it filling up with exhaust fumes (gun gum):D

However i noticed the front left wheel had a few drops of oil on it. On closer examination it seemed to have come from the CV joint. - Amazingly the diff was empty. Filled it up with EP 80/90 and out it all came 1-2 drips/min:eek:

Is this something easy to fix - I have 3 hours tomorrow night before i need to drive 250miles to Walse:mad:

I do have a photo of this, but i can't find the damn cable to download them. Will follow if needed when i find the stupid thing

is it coming out of the shaft side ( under the cap ) or the drive flange ?
or is it coming out of the swivel housing ?

Its leaking out from the swivel housing between the ball of the CV joint and the metal plate that seems to bolt around it.

Ah take it ye mean it's leaking from the seal on the swivel ball? The cv joint is inside the swivel housing;)
If it is the seal, then there has been loads of stuff mentioned before on here about it;):D

Ah that may be why i could not find it when i searched for it. I have just attached a photo to the previous post. Can you confim this is what you mean?

Give it a good clean furst to get rid of all that crap to see if it's leaking from somewheres else. Lookin' at the state of the ball tho' it looks like that pittin' is dragging all yer stuff out. If ye need a quick fix to get to where ye're going then bung some one-shot swivel grease in the housing;)

I presume that i would need to take the ring off around the swivel joint, and pack the grease in there? and then clamp it back on?

Looks like greese filled hubs ! plenty of posts on here about these seals .
Best check how much greese/oil you have left in the hub too when your down there :) .

nope there is a 12mm square plug on the front side of the hub , thats your leval/filler plug

mind you id love to see how long that would take you doing it that way lol can i watch and laugh :D :p

Thanks for help. The diff was empty, so need to fill it up - looks wike i'm going to sell halfords out of the EP 80/90 again!

I presume that the oil in the hub is the same as the axel?

So basicly I take the plug out and pack the grease in put the plug back in, then fill up the axel again - and hope it does not come out again?

Nope, there is a filler hole on the front of the housing about half ways up that has a square plug in it. It might be an idea to drain the housing first incase ye put too much grease in. Depending on yer motor it might or might not have a drain plug tho'! The 200tdi has a drain plug kinda to the back of the bottom swivel. When ye come to fill the housing, turn the wheel out as this helps get the grease in without too much of an obstruction. When ye get a bit more time on yer hands it might be time to change yer swivel balls... ye can get kits pretty reasonable at the like of paddocks etc.
This might give ye an idea when ye come to do it..

yes EP90 in the hubs and the diff/axle .....DONT pack it with normal grease if you want to go down that road .. the only greese you should use in the hubs is ONESHOT as its semi liquid .

Aye like sypher says. A handy wee tip when usin' oneshot in bottles... stick it in some hot water furst. Best to get the packet stuff with the nozzle;):D

Sorry for confusion - got that about the grease, was just on auto pillot with 'packing' the grease.

just to confim that the hub and axel are the same 'container' i.e. i put the OneShot grease in the hub, and then fill the diff, and the oil flows down to the swivel joint?

I'm sure i will work it out on my own, but as i have very little time just want to be sure i know exatly what needs doing.

Nope, if the ep is going into the housing then yer seals are needing done. Best to do these at the same time as the swivels... ah'm almost sure they come with the kit, bust best ask furst;)

That seems to be what is going on - as the speed of the leak increased significantly when i filled the diff up. - So it looks like i need to take it all apart - so time to get the car out for the trip to wales, (or fill it up every 50 miles)

defo got to take it apart as the shaft seal sounds totally shot .... mind you the ball seal is too . renew all if you can afford it . if its pouring out at the speed you say it is i wouldnt want to take it too far for fear of running the diff/cv joint+ wheel bearings dry ....

credit card time me thinks and several hours with dirty hands :D .
