Anyone else wondered why they've booked tickets on a particular le shuttle and then get bumped to a following train even when they turn up on time?

Or maybe checked online to see if there are space available on a crossing but then rung up to book to be told there are no spaces?

Well, its because the discovery is actually a "car with a top box"!!

Even though it asks you what your car is, their web site doesn't actually point out that this is a high sided vehicle and would need to go in the high sided carriages!

So, don't get caught out - a Discovery is a 'car with a top box' and not a ' car or car based van'

Though, since high sided carriages seem to fill up sooner, just book it as a 'car or van based car' and argue the toss when you get there :)

I do the trip three times a year and never had a problem with the Shuttle, or ferry the just tick the box 'over hight vehicle' easy on the high speed catamaran there's just one level.
Then go with the people carriers, white vans, coaches and on the ferry HGV's.
The Shuttle is far to expensive and never do any deals.

We go to Nuenen every May/June for the Dutch Bank Holiday engine show, and while our own forum has members all over, it's interesting to see the various options that are used to get over.

Eurotunnel is out for us because of the LPG, but Stena Line have no problem at all, so we go Harwich - Hook of Holland then drive down to Eindhoven/Nuenen for the show. We are close to the A6/A14 junction, so that's an easy option for us.

Northern members use Hull-Rotterdam with P&O, but they have some strange rates for motorhomes etc.

Others use the Tunnel in various options, especiually if there are any options on fares available.

As i'm only 50mins from Dover I always travel from Dover, first with Townsend Thoresen and Herald of Free Enterprise which sank, but now with P&O or Sea france, I have tried the shuttle a few times if the price is right but the only advantage is the time only 1/2 hour (traveling time).
We did have a ferry from Shearness to Vlissingen Holland but sadly no more, now that ferry did motor, I forget the time it took but with a swimming pool, a restaurant, a bar, a disco and a cabin who cares. :beer2:
