As some of you are aware I've had numerous problems, fuel pump, charge light etc etc.. I'm hoping this next one is the last for a while..!

In my last post about the charge light I mentioned the noise from the fan.. the light coming on was a dodgy connection in the alternator as some of you suggested.. Still left with the fan sounding like its going to come off and fly through the rad or through the bonnet..! It does stop when the engine is flat out but I dont think it will put up with that for long..!

All the nuts are tight and the belt is adjusted correctly, tried a little squirt of wd40 in behind the fan but didnt make any difference. The fan and the pulley that its attached to has very slight play if you wiggle it backwards and forwards.. is a new water pump the answer do you think?

it sounds like play in the water pump. have you tried running it without the fan. chances are yu wont need it at all in the winter, unless yu get stuck in a queue for 5 mins or so.

having just fitted an elec fan. mine doesnt come on at all unless i hit alot of traffic. I spose i shud ask wot injun yo got, as it int in yo profile?
 
i agree it sounds like water pump bearings on there way for the cos of a waterpump i would replace it there shouldn't be any noticable play in the pump the last thing you want is the pump letting go as fishing bit of old pump out of the block is no fun
 
Only run it with no belt on for a few minutes, I'll try that and see what happens... I'm not keen on having all the rad out or even tackling the pump at the mo.. doesnt look like its been touched for years... its a 2.25 petrol..

So what are the benefits of an electric fan?

Ah right, I'll worry about an electric fan another time then...!

New pump then, this is going to be a ridiculous question I'm sure, but is there enough room to get the pump out with out having the rad out?

several points
yu dont need to take the belt off. Adviseable not to - yu need the pump running.
dont remove the rad either.
just remove the four bolts holding the fan onto the pump.
then try it
if yu want to take the belt off after - its nice n easy.
a fan always takes a small amount of power from the enhjun and yu NEED evry bit yu can get. - a lecky fan only runs when its needed - not all the time.
and yes - yu can turn it orf when wading
i did a write-up of fitting a pug 306 thermo fan to the Dibnah (S3)
 
If you've established the problem is with the water pump, why do you want to take the fan off?
I think, its possible to remove the pump with the rad in place, but not a lot of room, so if you're not familiar with the process, or you think its been on so long there could be problems, it's probabaly best to take the rad of, you can see what your doing then. You've got to disconnect the hoses anyway|!
 
Taking the fan off would be a temporary thing wouldnt it? It would take some of the strain off the pump at least. I will try that for a start, and then work out when to start dismantling the thing to do the pump... I agree about the rad though, probably just as well to take it out if the pump doesnt come out easily..
 
If the big fan is well out of balance taking it off might shut the bugger up.
It won't overheat any time the car is moving. If you get stopped for a while, turn the motor off.

Have a look at pictures for Discomania's Def 90. I fitted two SAAB rad fans to that, and in the last two years we think the fans started running ONCE.

That was in the summer, low range, off road, loaded with people and logs, going up a ridiculously steep slope.

With leccy fans it is always a good idea to fit a manual switch as well (dead easy to do). This means that you can fire the fan(s) on BEFORE the engine heats up, and cool the radiator coolant lower than usual (the engine stays hot because of the thermostat) and this gives you a better reserve of COOL to prevent a steamshow.
