Hi there

I have a 90 Defender ('N' Reg) van. When I first start it and pull away slowly, there is what I can only describe as 'growling' or 'whirring' noise which comes from the engine. It also happens when I take a corner, or when reversing. When driving through the gears on a straight road it doesn't make this noise. Any ideas?

Regards

It's not easy to diagnose faults from a description.

I've made a dick of myself before and had to admit Slob was right (Oh the embarassment of it!).

Are you sure the noise is coming from the engine not one of the swivel joints on the front wheel (it's the going round corners bit that I'm thinking of).

Does the engine noise cover the growling noise as you speed up and you only hear it going slowly in reverse or going round corners.

Hi there

Thanks for your reply. I discovered at the weekend that the noise appears to be coming from the steering box. When the engine is on (its power asissted stearing) whether I'm moving or not, when the wheel is turned in any direction, I get the noise...any ideas?

Cheers

afaik they are self bleeding. as YD says, turn the wheel from lock to lock a few times. that should do it.

OK then perhaps I wasn't clear enough.

On top of the steering box there is a bleed nipple, with the engine running and the reservoir full slacken the nipple off and wait till clean fluid comes out of the bleed nipple put a clear tube on it first and run it into jam jar. Keep topping the reservoir up as necessary.
