Do you notice the people who slag off landrovers for parts failing dont seem to rearlise the part isnt actually made by landrover... To be truthful though ive been around landrover since i has born starting with ex military series 2a v8, Then a 2 door range rover, Then a 2.5 n/a 90, Then a series 3, Curently my parents now own a discovery one and a 200tdi 90, All these vehicles have never seemed to give much trouble. I currently own a discovery 2 this seems to be when landrover let it slip. But i wouldnt change it for the world. Dan

Well you may think all Land Rovers are marvelous but I think they are really poorly designed and engineered.

I could give you thousands of examples, but the one that is uppermost in my mind today is - leaks, water leaks, particularly sunroofs leaking.

I have loads of cars with sunroofs for the last 30 yrs and none have leaked - but Land Rover ? Both ours leak !!!!!!

I love my Disco's with a passion but I'm not blind to their faults, they are like big mechanno kits but as for modern engineering and design - you gotta be kidding.

Cheers
Dave

Rustproofing - ha!!! That's a larff !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree - I have always wanted a Landrover but new they had a bad reputation. I bought a discovery last year and although I think it's great (althouogh I did have to get it towed out of mud by a tractor which was a bit embarasing) the build quality and engineering is pretty shoddy.

The previous two cars I've owned have been Japanese (Honda and Toyota) and the build quality on both of these was visibly better. I've had more things break and fall off in 9 months of Land Rover ownership than the previous 14 years of Japanese car ownership!

As for the parts being sourced from somewhere else - imposing tight quality control on suppliers is a vital part of quality.

Perhaps that's why parts for a Land Rover are relatively cheap and they are maintainable.

Would I buy a Land Rover again - definately.

Would I recomend one to a friend - probably not - unless they're prepared to spend a lot at garages or do a lot of minor repairs.

You've hit the nail on the head with this last bit !!

As I said I love my Landys, but I bought the first one 5 years ago really quite blind. It was a great learning opportunity which I was forced to participate in, but I'm glad I did.

I choose LR now, because I've had the wonderful opportunity to learn loads from forums like this one and their membership. And the parts prices allow you to keep the vehicle in tip-top condition, mechanically

I reckon buying a second-hand Landy is a bit like taking up a new hobby - it's definitely not about just buying transport. Those that go into Landy ownership on that basis will get very frustrated - but treat it as an experience and it's really great.

To become more self-reliant about servicing and repairing my vehicles is a real plus.

However, I still think they rust too much !!!!!!!!! And the sunroofs leak !!:drum:

Sister recently asked me what would be the best 4x4 for towing their (pretty small) caravan. They know I tow everywhere and often help others get off their pitches/sites as we go to a lot caravan rallies in fields etc

I suggested that if all she wants is a 4x4 towcar/general purpose runaround/easy to run vehicle she ought to get a Nissan X-Trail, Subaru Outback/Forester, Honda CRV, Toyota Rav 4 ... Freelander2 ... in that order!!!

My hobby is my Disco. Having children has limited my time for hobbies so now on the rare occasion that i do have a couple hours to myself i'm out on the driveway. Doing servicing and finding the next problem to deal with, i'm learning all the time and isn't it brilliant when you do a job, turn the key, and it still works!

I've always wanted a Landy of any type, get to drive at work which is nice if you ain't got one!!

It's like you all said it's a blooming hobby and if you like making/fixing things they are the way forward.

Looking to get a 91 Disco in the next couple of weeks and should keep me busy for hours on the weekends- CAN'T WAIT!!!!!!

if yoy like mucky hands ( and other bits) and playing with meccano stes then go with the green oval - I've been driving em since 1988, I had a break while the kids were little ( and I was commuting a 60mile round trip a day) now I don't I'm back to em.
key thing to remember-
Land Rovers are a drug - highly addictive

Im not slagging landrovers off at i wouldnt own anything else, All im trying to say it it seems the newer models are harder to fix when they go wrong. And you carnt allways do everything like you could with an older vehicle ie fix it in the feild on a green lane halfway up a mountain ect ect. Dont get me wrong my discovery is a fabulious peice of kit. It would be cool if landrover could have stuck to their roots with the easy of rapair and lack of laptops. I.e The TC, HDC and ABS systems on disco 2 are prone for faults why use this technology if it isnt reliable??? Why not make the flex plate on the Auto stronger??? I dunno if its me or i brought a bad one but since ive had my disco 2 (1 year) 2 abs sensors, Fuel pump, 1 new injector, fuel pressure regulator, level sensor, 2 air bags, new front propshaft, New steering box, new drag link, new air flow sensor, new brake light switch, new injector loom, Also i have converted from auto to manual as my autobox fail and i wanted to get rid of some of the electrics. I think some of the items i have listed here could have been resolved by different design. Im sure some of you on here wont be too happy with my post...? And heres what i Have done to it so far if you would let me know what you think i would appreciate it. Here goes winch bumper, 2" front lift springs, 2" lift shocks all round, braided brake lines all round, bfg at 265/75/16 (changing to mud terrains in same size) The rear has to inch lift ont the air bags i can also still raise the rear a further 2" by pressing the offroad mode button so in total the rear lifts to 4" for steep hills n stuff, k&n filter, my own custom made difflock linkage enables me to use TC and difflock together. I am currently making a half cage for the front witch incoporates a snokel and light bar. Also rock sliders. Things i will be fitting soon are front and rear ARB air lockers, tds goldfish 12,000 winch, devon 4x4 rear bumper, steering guard, rear tank guard thats about it so what do you think?????
