Hi guys the tyres are 205 80 16. The diffs are all the old 10 spline ones.

I don't think I'll change the transfer box I'm happy cruising at 50 with the stereo turned up lol.

I'm looking at caravans so it may come in handy for towing that?

I have 205 85 16, standard for a 90. And with a 2.5 td I can easily get over 70 on the clock, no idea what that would be actual.

So I think there is some kind of issue with your Tdi, possibly it is not revving out due to amateur fuel pump adjustment, or similar.

I would try and rectify the issue, and try the performance, rather than spending time and money on replacing a working transfer box! :)

My 1990, 110, 200tdi all standard will cruise at 70 mph all day and night. Travelled down to southern Spain on the auto route nearly two thousand kilometers each way when I went to Morocco. I run on 235/85/16 tyres. It will do 80 mph and still has a bit in reserve but I don't like pushing it that much. My Transfer box is a standard Defender box.
On the trip through Morocco one guy had a problem with his 90 and blew the rear diff and front track rod. They got the diff replaced in Morocco. After that they could not go over 50 mph.

It will now cruise at 60 - all I did was re set the valve clearence!

It would go faster than 50 but sounded like it was going to explode above that. Some of the gaps where over 2mm. It now sounds like a different engine and much better.

you must be pleased. Better than spending on money on something that isnt wrong :)

I can cruise at 85 (GPS speed) since i tweaked the fuel pump and put the big intercooler on. It has a bit more left to go but I didnt dare :)

i always kinda presume that people have done the obvious :D

glad it's sorted

only masks the issue madhatman.

the 90 with a 200tdi should be doing more than 50.

my 90 with the stock lt77 and transfer box did 75 with the old 2.5TD

if it only does 50 with the 200tdi ill be putting the 2.5TD back in;)

It sure should, even my factory drive train 1990 90 2.5NA used to do faster than 50! It was slow and took a while but she would go along at 65 no bother.

Perfectly stable just high really high revs

I see you have fixed it, thing I often ask Defender owners about their engine revs, how high? Is it high because it sounds high or is the engine actually going fast.

My Defender has the same drive train as a Discovery, both are 300tdi, my Discovery would cruise along at 90 odd no bother sounded really sweet actually. The Defender sounds manic at 75mph, but it's not going any faster than it would in a Discovery at 75 where it was no bother at all, in fact the engine gets an easier life in my Defender because it's just too noisy to drive it faster than 60mph.
