LANDROVER 110 1985 model newbee!

I recently bought the above metioned vehicle but have come across a few
strange things, it may be normal! I wonder if anyone can help
1. when I drive over a ramp I hear a clanking noise from the rear of
vehicle,what could be leading to this noise?
2. Sometimes I cannot get in the fifth gear and after some fiddling it
goes in 5th gear, also sometimes there is a clanking noise when I
change gears! any comments.
Lastly Other day while I was driving for about 5 hours (nearly 200
miles) the engine just died. It started after couple of minutes and as
I moved it died again. I waited for about 10 minutes and then it was

1. Probably a problem with the rear suspension, most likely the ball joint
on top of the axle, but could be any of the suspension bushes. Also, it
could be anything loose - I have had this from my Hayman-Reece towbar, for
example. Difficult to be more definite without hearing it.
2. Check that the oil level in the gearbox is correct and the oil is the
right type. Clanking noise when changing gears is not unusual with inexpert
gear changing, but are exacerbated by excessive free play in the
transmission, which can be anywhere in the drive train, usually little bits
adding up from the gearbox, transfer case (especially the trust washers on
the centre diff), u-joints, prop shaft sliding joints, front and rear
diffs, drive flanges. But the problem will be exacerbated by either the
clutch not disengaging properly (and maybe this is the problem fifth gear)
or the handbrake dragging.
Lastly, it is difficult to suggest anything without knowing what sort of
engine you have. There were at least four engines fitted to this model,
diesel and petrol, and there have been a number of additional engines have
been fitted after market.
If it is a petrol engine, the symptoms could indicate an overheating coil,
possibly because it is the wrong type, a faulty condenser, or a a partly
blocked fuel system or a blocked tank vent or just plain overheating. If it
is diesel it is most likely a fuel problem.

Could be lots of things, but rear shock absorber top bushes is
quite likely. If they are ok, have a look at all the supsension bushes.

This is really in "it could be so many things remote diagnosis is
tricky" territory. First off, change the oil in the box - ATF realy
only last about 8 or 9,000 miles before gear selection problems
arise. When changing the oil, do any interesting metallic bits come out?
Is there a yellow tinge to the oil, or maybe grey-metallic?

Is the clanking noise related to the gearbox or drive train - i.e.
it it when selecting a gear, or when releasing the clutch?
