Land Rover Parts or not??

I totally agree Data. Have been pushing this for a long time. I see no point in buying a vehicle for £3000.00 then spending £5000.00 on overpriced over rated parts...

Ah those were the MaxPower boys with their Astras! Probably the same guys 15 years later who.. er... never mind... better hold my tongue! :p

Mintex linings cost £18.49 front and £14.99 rear. Both including vat. That is retail, less 15% trade. That is £33.48 or less all up. You can buy a lot of wheel cleaner for £66.52.

To be fair Mintex is prone to brake-squeal but they work just fine.

I totally agree Data. Have been pushing this for a long time. I see no point in buying a vehicle for £3000.00 then spending £5000.00 on overpriced over rated parts, just because they give you this or give you that(according to the sales bumph). When you could have spent £8000.00 on a better vehicle. The Kevin and his supped up Corsa syndrom seems to be alive and well though. Think the British motorists spend something like £900,000,000.00 a year on mostly useless addon bits. One bloke spending £100.00 on a set of pads must be off his head in my book, but as long as he is happy so what it's not my money he is wasting.
indeed i was the bloke who paid £100 for a set of pads
maybe so but my range rovers work and earn there keep , they both tow double axle trailers normally weighing 3 ton and up to 3.5 ton, running normal pads and discs was a waste of time every 6-8 months would need new pads and discs ,the standard disks would warp and cause shuddering when braking and get so hot they would turn blue
and this is not from driving hard just from driving at a sensible speed and monitoring the road conditions with this weight
also the brake dust would etch into the laquer and take ages to clean wheel cleaner would only remove 75% of the dust the rest, well very light rubbing with a brillo pad . as an end result had to re laquer the wheels.
however since fitting uprated pads and drilled and slotted discs all the above problems have been solved discs dont turn blue or warp ,brake dust just washes of with soapy water and on applying the brakes they grab quicker
i also advised a freind of mine who dosent tow a trailer to fit just the pads as he was fed up with his alloy wheels being so difficult to clean and he coulnt belive the difference
now i know this is not for everyone but i think they are worth every penny in the downtime and Inconvenience they save me.
depends on how much you value your time in my case standard pads and discs are a waste of money as i have proved it:)

Ok so you have a genuine case for doing what you did. But Range Rover brakes are designed to handle the sort of loads you mention. Trailers are supposed to brake themselves. Maybe by attending to the trailer brakes you could save money on Range Rover brakes.

trailer brakes work fine-towing this weight with no trailer brakes you would end up through a hedge

Yes i agree. But with your description of what was happening to rangie brakes it would seem they are doing a bit more than just retarding vehicle and letting trailer brake it'self. All i am saying is that if trailer brakes were tip top then there would not be as much load put on Rangie brakes.

Blimey, you must be hard on your brakes, I tow 3 tonnes with my P38 diesel auto and have never had a moments concern about the brakes:D
I have also recently had a P38 on a trailer behind my 90/330 RWD Transit and again no brake overheating etc. I think observation and anticipation of conditions leads to less need for abrupt or heavy braking. The pads on my last 4 X 4 lasted 100k miles.
I agree with your comments about the brake dust though.

Think you will find apart from the old copper slip on the backs and ends. Filing a slight chamfer on the leading edge will stop that.

:D:DI would agree with the above fitted mintex to both my classic and p38 had no problems with either apart from some squeal on the classic which was fixed as above, rear discs for the classic I got from island 4x4 again non oregenal parts but no problems, all from Ebay:D:D

my trailers are being towed 5 days aweek so this maybe the difference if i was towing 2-3 times a month maybe a diferent story also can travel upto 150 miles a day:)

I assume most of these opinions come from personal experience & like everything in life it's a case of 'each to his own' I use genuine parts on my RRC when it comes to suspension (although if I was running an RR chiefly for off-roading I'd go for pattern parts for cheapness & not care if the car didn't sit level or ride like it was designed to) I've not had a problem with B..tparts over four RRC's but I am guided by my local workshop as to what to/not to buy as some of their stuff is genuine & others dubious.

Maybe if you owners go to the Main Dealer when you order your new car or parts and say "I want my brakes to have slotted and drilled discs together with the brake pads advertised on Ebay fitted at manufacture, to suit my lifestyle" they will get the factory to order them, using their Paypal account especially for you.
OK they have made mistakes. but you and I have opted to buy their cars, but what do we do?? Look on the web, read the bull****e from "Experts" who know better than the manufacturers to sell us stupid products, eg Range Rover Sports Grilles, Side Vents which achieve nothing and all the other Quack stuff to make our motors go better, faster and more economical.
Get real..don't you realise that they are just getting the gullible to part with their cash.

The P38 is designed to tow a load relative to it's body weight as the law specifies, it's not a truck..if you want to use it to tow heavy loads constantly, or use it as a workhorse why not buy a Volvo or Scania instead of trying to do things on the cheap.

apart from the road work volvos and scanias are not much good at going across farmland:confused:

Amen to that. But it would sadly seem that gullibility rules, judging by a lot of posts on here.

Ooh..I just love setting the cat amongst the pigeons...and rattling a few cages!!

There is another alternative...Caterpillar tractor, they don't suffer EAS and slipped liner problems plus you can run them on marked deisel.
