Morning all,

I've been reading an interesting thread on RR.net about the loss of sync between GEMS BECMs and engine ECUs.

It appears that a tool to fix it was issued to all North American Spec dealerships called a FOUT tool.

You plugged it in to a couple of pins on the GEMS, put the BECM in learn mode and switched on.

Basically it reprogrammed the engine ECU mobilisation code to be FFFF. It was found that the BECM only forgot binary zeros not ones, so making the code FFFF ensured the mobilisation code doesn't have any zeros in it.

Has anyone in the UK ever heard of having this done? By all accounts you need testbook to re-program the GEMS ecu. I'm not sure if any of the others diagnostics machines will do it. Perhaps someone else can shed some light for me?

It's certainly something I'd like done if it removes the possibility of loosing sync ever again, and I can't be the only one that wants that!

Also, I know that you can write any mobilisation code to the EDC and THOR with a Nanocom. Is there any advantage to making this FFFF too?

Here's the link to the FOUT procedure to "Modify the Immobilisation strategy".

Just get yourself a Syncmate or a Nanocom that does everything you will need. Save a lot of buggering about.

I've got use of a Nanocom already, but that's not really my point wammers.

£150 for a syncmate or £450 for a Nanocom is a lot of money for something you shouldn't need anyway, and for something that LR can repair in half an hour but appear to choose not to.

Further, if writing FFFF to the THOR or EDC would cure that fault forever, it seems silly for everyone within easy reach of some diagnostics not to get it done for the same reason.

Get out there and see if you can find someone that can do it then. I have never heard of it before this. Don't know about Thor and Gems. But the code for EDC is implanted in the EDC unit and CANNOT be changed. It is copied to and then stored in the BECM. Sometimes the BECM forgets it. All a resync does is copy it back to the BECM from the EDC unit. It does not matter how much you play with the BECM you CANNOT change the code in the EDC. Appears to be only for GEMS engines. http://www.allbrit.de/downloads/TestBook/TestBook_LRNAFOUT.pdf

That changes things then.

I thought you could write a code to the EDC and THOR. Didn't realise you read the code from the engine and wrote it to the BECM when re-syncing.

I've no idea if there is any software available for re-programming the GEMS, I've had a quick look online, doesn't seem to be any freely available. The only stuff I can find is about re-mapping it for competition purposes and the like.

+1:) Plus I doubt that it actually cured the problem, maybe reduced it, no reason why FFF should be more stable than 0000. Also NAS set up is different from the rest of the world.

On the diesel if you buy a new EDC unit you can leave it in "None robust" setting in which case it does not need to sync with the BECM. But once it has been set to "Robust" it does and cannot be changed back. Just like you can have an "Unlocked" BECM and play with it as much as you want to with your Nanocom. But once it is "Locked" Nanocom CANNOT unlock it. Faultmate extreme can and maybe T4.
