i am a novice in the Land Rover world and have a question for you intelligent enthusiasts!
I have a '87 Land Rover 90 with a 200tdi conversion. There is a rattling noise which sounds like a penny in a tin can which comes from under the passenger seat. I believe it is a problem with the exhaust. Is this likely to be the case? It is worst when in low revs. forgive my ignorance but what part would I need and can I replace it myself? Does the engine type have a bearing on the part I need? Thanks in advance!

My first advice would be to get underneath and give things a good shake to see if anything is loose, particularly around the exhaust pipe hangers. Sometimes, I don't know why there can be a metalic rattle from the exhaust, maybe other members can come up with ideas on that front.
For safety's sake I would prefer to use vehicle ramps or if you have to use the vehicle emergency jack, don't get underneath until you have secured the vehicle on axle stands with the handbrake on and the wheels on the ground chocked to prevent movement.
Without actually seeing anything, it's almost impossible to say what might be required, but if it is a hanger for the exhaust then it might just be a replacement rubber carrier or in a worse case, it could be a damaged or missing bracket attached to the chassis.

As Brian says, it sounds like an exhaust rubber. Does it go away when you rev the engine?

Mind you, when a Defender stops rattling, it's time to check what's fallen off.

Thanks gents, I found it. It was an exhaust rubber but having fixed that I have found that the intermediate pipe has sheared which is why it had come loose. Oh well could be worse!
