I get exactly what you mean, something like a series 3 would be great to start out on and get to grips more with the mechanics side!

I have considered a freelander 1, and they would definitely be good to start out on! I think i would definitely have to test drive the different models, especially going from a 3dr yaris! :D

You're right, i think i could be being a bit unrealistic with the D3, especially with limited mechanical experience so I would be relying on a garage more most things.

I really appreciate all the advice though, thank you very much!

Series are fairly simple to work on, parts are cheap, and insurance will be affordable for an 18 year old.

Freelander 1s are very cheap, even for a good one with a years ticket, not to bad too work on yourself with the help of the freelander section.
And if you have a budget of £5k, you should have £4k in the pot for repairs, insurance, etc. Keep you going for a few years while you get older and build up no claims. Freelander 1 are a good road vehicle for your commute, and better off road than most people think, especially with a good driver.

hi mate

ur very welcome and would never like to put u off a landy that you’ve set ur heart on, was just concerned with ur pocket

the series 3 are indeed a great motor to learn on, doesn’t have the extensive electronics that the later models have

petrol ones are a lot quieter than diesels , always better to have a test drive in both , maybe asking to see if someone will come with u on a possible purchase that knows land rovers

I agree that they would be great to start off with! I know I'd like to get into green laning a bit, nothing too serious, and getting to shoots etc, which I presume a freelander 1 should do this pretty easily?

No worries.:)

And yes, a Freelander is well up to most green lanes, and getting to shoots. Especially if you uprate the tyres a bit.

Don't worry mate i completely get that, I know disco's have the potential to cost a lot of money, more so with the price range I'm looking at :/

So they would be ideal really to learn on! the only thing is that I would have to use it every day, and getting to Cardiff and back from the east-mids every 5 weeks or so, any idea if this would be a good idea for a 30+ year old landy?

I think i'll definitely have more of a look into a freelander 1, especially since it would be good on road for every day use and it should easily handle any light off roading I'd be doing to begin with!

glad it was of some use to u

maybe as you’ve got that kind of daily commute a freelander 1 maybe a better option, i personally had a TD4 , has a bmw engine and when i got rid of mine it was on 190,000 miles, never let me down ,

like all landies there are particular things u have to look out for ,but there’s plenty of help on here

As great as a series would be I think you're right.
The TD4 would definitely best! Would you say there's any difference or benefit between a 3 or 5 door or would that just be down to personal preference?

as u commute i think the freelander would be better

i had the 3 door and wished i had got the 5 door, easier if u take passengers in having the 5 door

there has been a lot of reports ref the 1.8 petrol with head gasket failures so that’s why i went with the td4; u can expect on a run to get 40 mpg from a td4

if u have around a 5k budget spending 4k should get u a very nice freelander , leaving u some spare for any work that needs doing

Spending 1 or 2 K should get you a nice Freelander.

wow 40mpg is great! my 1.3 Toyota Yaris that i have at the moment gets about 45, so a freelander would be perfect really
