Land Rover @ 18?

Hey Everyone!

I've just joined today and I'm hoping to upgrade (from a 1.3 Yaris) to my first LR in the next few months, and was wondering if anyone could give me any advise?
Basically I can now afford to insure a landy, and with a budget of around £5k i was looking at a disco 2, higher miler disco 3, or a freelander 2. I know either of these aren't exactly the cheapest to run, especially the disco's, but I'm fairly sure i can do it.

I was wondering if anyone could give any advise as to whether or not this is a good idea, or which of the three i would be best to go for?
I'm hoping to try and get into green laning, but nothing too serious (yet), and have wanted a LR since i was about 4 years old!

Any help would be great!

D2 would be my choice, though they do rust!!

I doubt you'll get insured on a D3, my brother (22, licence 2 years) was looking at one, the insurance was £3k!

D2 would definitely be my choice too! Though i know they would possibly too expensive to run/maintain

D2 would be the most affordable to buy, but buying a proper one is another matter entirely.

Shouldnt be, my 110 TD5 (same engine as the D2) returns about 25 - 28mpg on average around town and 30+ on motorway but its off road biased and a lot of extra weight added. A decent D2 should return more.

Tax is around £220 - £280 depending, again not too bad.

Insurance im not sure but should be sub £1.5k at least

Service costs, if you DIY is around £100

Get hold of a Nanocom, around £250, which will let you stay on top of any leccy issues.

I'm hoping to find one with minimal rust underneath! Might be difficult :/

Not just underneath! The boots rot out around the seatbelt mounts which is an MOT fail and pricey to repair. Theres many a guide/thread on here with exactly what to look for!

Looked after the TD5 is a brilliant engine with some hefty tuning available!

That sounds a lot better than I've read about! And yeah, the insurance I've found is round about that mark, and tax is definitely affordable as well.

also tried to get my son 26 as a named driver for my D3 , was also silly money

with a d3 starting around group 33 i dread to think what it would cost for an 18 year old, second mortgage time

Somehow I found a cheap quote on a D3, but I probably shouldn't put too much faith on comparison websites!

adrian flux or A plan are specialists ref land rover ins, may be able to give u a quote

hope u don’t mind me asking but will u be doing all the work urself

if it needs the cam belts replacing , being done every 105,000 miles or 7 x years u have to allow at least £1k

ur very welcome, u will find this forum a massive help and plenty of members to always give u an honest review of the different models

just a thought , have u ever thought of a series land rover, very simple to repair , no electronics and an ideal landy to learn on

I would love a series land rover, but not sure it would be a good idea as it would have to get me to work each day and to wales and back fairly regularly :/

they are very reliable,diesels are noisy though , petrol alot quieter

do u have a long commute then , was just thinking with a series u can learn basic mechanics before moving into the more advanced land rovers

also at the end of the day it’s what u want a land rover for, capacity , how much space u need, towing , if ur going to use it greenlaning a lot , if u bought a D3 and relying on a garage for repairs u could end up spending 1,000s in each year, where as if u went for a simplier land rover it would allow u to learn basic mechanics

i owned a freelander 1 TD4 before the disco and was a great little car, are comfortable , easy to maintain , decent mpg and a lot cheaper to insure

just thinking of ur pocket , have u driven each model ur interested in , at the end of the day after test driving them find out what it costs each year to run one , servicing , what u want it for

had my D3 a year now and got to admit is an awesome motor , but do need to be bought with care , can spend £2-3k in the blink of an eye if u buy one that hasn’t been looked after , even more if u have to rely on a garage

great you’ve joined the forum, as at least u will get facts and figures of what kind of landy u want
