surely there must be small independants with knowledge cheaper
Yes lots. But not all garages like Freelanders. Over the years we've seen a lot of peeps come on here with silly FL faults which are known to LR garages, but not general garages. Some have paid out for trial and error fixing. You takes your chances I guess... Bit like the jatco auto level plug being on the botton, and some removing the wrong nut on the rear and causing loss of reverse gear.

update. rang local landrover and was told to replace slave cylinder will take 6and half hours at £90.00 per hr plus vat. Then rang guy who done mine and told him his reply was no way can be done in this time but after he made a few calls rang back to say it took him 20hrs but would reduce his labour to 10hrs and charge me £350 for labour plus parts.this i think is a much better price and am happy to pay.

Good result, not sure where he got his original 20 hrs from though.

We charge £40ph + vat if the book say's (autodata) 5hrs that's what gets charged unless there is a legitimate reason for charging extra like snapped/seized bolt or similar, there is a garage near me that charges ramp time, they ain't very busy though  8 hrs plus to change a RWD transit clutch ****es customers off a tad.
