Hello All,

Newbie here, just got a 2002 TD6 vogue last week and love the car, only problem is there is a battery drain somewhere which is causing the battery to flatten overnight  (sometimes two nights if its been on a longer run). I've been searching previous questions on this matter on here and I believe the HVAC? Climate control system can have something to do with it and not letting the car go to sleep?

I read that generally if this is faulty or needs the wiring harness upgrade there should be a telltale light on the transmission panel next to Park. My car hasn't got any lights on when it is locked and left.

I've got a friend coming up tomorrow who is an auto electrician and would be grateful if anyone could shed light onto any other possible known drain issues so we can start to eliminate them. Tried two batteries, both of which were known to be good.

Thanks in advance

Mike

You may have tried two batteries both known to be good, but the fact that the distance driven before parking makes a difference seems significant....
Is it possible that the battery isn't getting charged properly when the engine is running, i.e. it's almost flat when you park up ?

I think I'd start by leaving the battery on charge for 24 hours and then parking the RR up for a couple of nights to see what happens before I tried to look for any leakage. It may not be leakage, it could be that you're starting with an almost flat battery.

Good luck !

Brian

Thanks for the responses fella's, checked the american fault finder link a few days ago so it could be the HEVAC unit draining the car.

pretty sure the batteries aren't to blame. I bought the car from a salvage auction (undamaged, dunno why it was there TBH) and the battery that was on it was flat as a pancake, I'd already told a friend I was buying it and he happened to have a 6 month old battery lying about (which he tested and fully charged before I got the car recovered). Swapped the battery over last thursday and drove about 50 miles with a few starts, left it and tried to start it saturday and it was flat. At same time had the orig battery on charge at mates garage and tested it before picking it up and all was well so swapped back to that on sun and come tuesday was dead again so deffo a drain........

had a look at the fuse box and there seems to be some corrosion on the lower bank of fuses (no signs of flood damage as far as i know or can tell). My other auto electrician mate is coming round tomorrow so I'll post back my findings hopefully so that it may help someone else. He know's his stuff so hopefully a couple of hour fault finding should find the problem

Just an update for anyone having issues similar to mine......

Car was drawing 0.6 amps/hr in sleep mode due to faulty/damaged sat nav player in boot. Unit had somehow got wet and was not turning off causing the constant drain.

With this removed the car is now drawing around 0.12 amps/hour, apparently this is nothing to worry about according to the auto electrician/mate who fixed it, said the car will draw that cause of the computers etc.

Does anyone know if this is correct or not? He said it'll probably take around a week to flatten a full charged battery if the car isn't used very often.

Still seems a lot, it's 3aH/day which is significant as the only things running should be the alarm and the remote receiver.

Still, a RR battery must be at least 70aH so you've probably got a couple of weeks before there's not enough left to turn the engine over, I've certainly left mine for over a week with no problems......

i often leave my disco for a few weeks without driving an flashes up on the button. I imagine it draws a similar amount to the RR. It shouldn't go flat in a week im sure

I think the battery thats on it is a 110 amp but how it stands up I suppose time will tell, I don't use the car everyday because I work from home so I'll have to make sure I start using it more often and take it for longer runs. It was just annoying that everytime I wanted to jump in and drive off the battery was flat.

Still don't understand why it is drawing any sort of ampage whilst sleeping but my mate was pretty certain it was the norm? I may still get it booked into a specialist because it needs a service anyhow and my pal was just doing me a favour having a quick look at it.

He also told me to make sure I charged the battery overnight so that its got a fair chance of starting the car, because every time I'm starting it off a battery booster charger its still only gonna be about a 3rd charged with the relatively short runs I'm taking it on.

Normally when you switch the car off the BECM can take up to 20 mins to shut down.
My P38 was drawing .2 of an amp over night because of the BECM kept waking up every 20 minutes or so. This was enough to flat my battery after two days. (new Bosch).
This is caused by the interference in the RF receiver and remote central locking by wireless doorchimes, remote garage doors, etc.
Don't know if it has the same probs an the l332.
Might be worth finding the rf receiver in yours and unplug it to see if after a few days your battery is still ok.
I don't know where they are on yours but on the P38 they are behind the boot liner under the ariel in the rear glass.
You should still be able to lock the vehicle with the key in the door.
Updated rf receivers are £150.00.
Now sorted my P38 was left for two weeks in an airport car park and started first turn of the key when I got back so they should last for more than a week if only the alarm is set.

Had this problem, it was an easy fix.

Please use the search function (top right corner) search for 'L322 Battery' I posted here with the reply (swast4)

hope this helps.

Hi did you sort out why sat nav was getting wet .exact same thing happend to mine had to get new sat nav .but can't stop water from coming in .Currently stuffing a towel above sat nav unit and changing it every couple of weeks

I DID sort the battery drain issue, but its come back again in another way I think. Things were fine after replacing the Sat Nav/leaving it unplugged but it started playing up again last friday.

I removed the Sat Nav again on friday, boosted the battery with my charger/booster and it seemed fine, did loads of short trips over the weekend stopping and starting followed by a nice long run (100 miles last night). Jumped in this morning (monday) to go out and the battery's flat again.

Got mine booked in at the local Land Rover dealer for a service and diff recall but thats not for three weeks. I'm going to check the HVAC system as well as that may be the issue with mine I'm hoping? I'll post back on here when I've found this second battery leak. BTW my battery was checked last time I had issues and that was fine and healthy

There doesn't seem to be any more water leaks in the rear area of my car. I spoke to a specialist a few weeks ago about other matters. He said it can come in anywhere around the back end from the tail gate, rear window seal, roof rail runners, light clusters. He did say if the car has had a slight knock it'll more than likely be the reason for the water coming in.

may be a case of checking all areas and trying to seal as best you can. Someone also suggest putting the Nav unit in a bag but i didnt feel too comfortable doing that myself, they get hot and need to cool down somehow, being stuck in a bag ain't gonna help matters

Had the same problem on my 2002 L322 - turned out to be the hvac fan relay resistor which sits up under the dashboard - remove trim above pedals and another trim to the left ( on the tunnel ) and you will find it away up under the dashboard. It's a bit of a fiddle to fit but it solved my problem. Part number ( from memory ) is JG 0000021

In Feb. '07 a TSB was issued by Land Rover for 'navigation system inoperative/rear quarter water ingress' on L322s. The fix was to fit a water shedder (part no. EOT500030) behind the navigation unit bracket.

Yep - it's the HVAC resister relay - part no. JG0000021 and it's located way up under the dashboard ( right hand ). Remove the panels above and to the left of the pedals and you will see it ( just! ) away up under the dash. A bit of a fiddle but solved the problem for me - I had a flat battery every three days.

I've got a 52 reg TD6 Vogue, and I've been having exactly the same problem for months - leave it outside the house for a few days without starting and the battery just goes dead flat.
I was talking to a chap I know and he said that he had the same problem when he left his RR outside his mum's house for a week, but it never happens at his place. He reckoned that his mum's got one of those wireless gadgets that relays the level of the central heating oil in the tank (which is next to her drive) into a little indicator on her kitchen wall, and because this things on all the time it's pushing out a radio signal that's being picked up by the RR's alarm sensor and not letting it go to sleep. This causes a big drain on the battery.
So I got to thinking and looked around for a possible cause at my house. We've got wireless broadband, but I didn't believe that would cause it, but then I looked up and saw our burgular alarm box just above where I usually park. I'm experimenting at the moment by parking further away from the box, and so far I believe that I've found the cause of the problem because I can fire up after a week now and the battery's full of life.
Hope this helps.

I had the same problems with my 2002 l322 vogue.

Changed the hvac fan relay resistor JG 0000021 with no change

Changed the HVAC loom using the modified wiring harness YN1500040K again with no change except now when you turn on the right heated seat on, it works for 5 secs then turns off while also turning the heater fan to max!!!!!

Then went back to basics and changed the battery (which a tyre and battery centre had said was tested fine) and HURRAH!!!! seems to be working fine now even through the snow and cold of the last two weeks

Now going to remove the harness to see if my seat heater goes back to correct operation. fingers crossed

I got a similar result, although i got away with not changing the battery. I had been using a Halfords diesel charger, leaving it on until it showed fully charged, but it regularly lost its charge so I went in to my friendly local battery dealer, fully expecting to shell out for a new battery, and they don't come cheap for a TD6. They did a test with their fancy gadgets and declared that the battery wasn't knackered, but was very low on charge. I told them about the Halfords charger and they laughed and said something about playing with toys that didn't have enough oomph to excite the battery into taking a full charge To cut a long story short, they sold me a heavy duty charger, the sort that they use for charging tractor batteries, for £40 on sale or return, and then sent me away to put it on charge overnight.

Next day their test showed a fully charged battery. A week later we went off to Italy over Xmas and the car was left at Gatwick, out in the open through all that snow and ice. It was -4 when I got back 8 days later and to my great relief the engine turned over easily and fired first time. Since then there have been no starting problems, so I think that my £40 agri-charger has done the trick.
