Hi everyone.

Range Rover L322 V8 4.4 Vogue 2003 Model.
73k mileage - with all service stamps.
Lovely 2012 facelift + full colour change last year
- my pride & joy - but giving me a hard time at the moment!

I've been systematically working my way around my engine bay - trying to discover what on earth this noise is... what's broken... and how expensive it's going to be to put right?

Noise: High Pitch Whirring / Grinding / Dry Bearing kind-of sound.

Have replaced alternator / power steering pump.
Have disconnected 'Both' Belts and driven - noise still present (so nothing to do with any of the pulleys on the front of the engine.

Changed all fluids including trans / transfer box / diffs / engine / power steering (all fluids).

So now I'm t the point where I recognise it could be transmission / torque converter... but before I go down that road I would really like to know if anyone actually recognises this noise and advise on the appropriate action.

Just uploaded a video on youtube - would appreciate any informed comments.

Noise only happens when engine cold.
Only happens on take-off in 1st gear and much less in 2nd (auto ZF trans?.

I left it running whilst I washed it the other day - 30 mins of this before driving off.... no noise.

Many thanks for any advice.
Mark.

Ouch - big fuel bill for going nowhere!

No speakers at work so no point me watching the vid. However, could it be the timing chain rubbing against its tensioner? Oil pump? Just guesses...

Good luck!

daft as it sound i had this noise on mine, i found mine to be the metal disk brake guard things, the bolts had corroded through which ment it was flapping about.

hope yours is as simple to fix.

Nice V8 noise though! i miss mine :(

the use of a short length of hosepipe used to locate strange noises is a cracking method,
one end to your "best ear" the other wanders around to pinpoint noises..

used that idea for years,
bought a stethoscope but found it no better..

I use a 2' length of M5 studding with my thumb over the top held just in front of my lug-oil. :)

Interesting noise, sounds quite high speed like a tyre or brake rub, or prop etc

To eliminate the first gear thing, does it do it if you a rolling start in neutral on a big hill? Or just under power?
