Hi guys,

Got a water leak from somewhere behind all the belts and hoses at the front of the engine on my 2003 TD6. Can't see exactly where it's coming from, but by a process of elimination, I think it's coming from the vicinity of the water pump.

Are these a common source of problems (had a search and can't see any common trends)? Is it likely to be the pump itself leaking, or are the hoses in that area prone to perishing and leaks? Or could it be something more sinister?:flame2:

Before I start pulling things to bits , it'd be nice to have some idea of what to expect once I get to the source of the problem.

Thanks in advance for any comments..

yes water pumps do fail wouldnt say its a comon fault but t do ive change about 6 in the past 3 months.....is it definatly from behind the belts as the radiators are more common and they can spray jets of water straight at the block itself

My first thought was the rad, but it definitely looks like it's trickling down the front the block and not being sprayed around. trouble is, I can't see a ruddy thing up there really, even with all the undertray removed. I guess I'll have to start pulling things apart and see what's what.
RAVE says you need a couple of special tools to remove the viscous fan coupling. Are the really needed, or is there a trick to doing it without them?

If you do change your water pump, replace it with one with metal/aluminium splines as the plastic ones have been known to shatter and then get bits in your cooling system! I just bought one for £76. fitted with new coolant adn belt for £120.

The viscous fan coupling nut was a b*tch to get off so maybe give it a good soaking in WD40 or similar the day before.
