Evening all

trying to sort out a few niggles on the Range Rover now it’s been in daily use so there are a few new threads.

I have a vibration between 50 and 70 mph it seems to get better the faster you go. It seems worse under load but is still present on overrun.
At 50mph it only does it at about 1800rpm if I manually select 4th on the gearbox it goes.
I’ve had new tyres and had them balanced and it was like this before the tyre change.

I’m hoping you don’t tell me there’s an issue with the torque converter or fifth gear.
All suspension bushes and ball joints are new at the front and it has new pads and discs at the front with no seizing.
The vibration is mainly felt through the steering wheel but it can be felt through the seats in the whole car front and back.

The rubber donut in the propshaft looks ok with no cracking and the centre support bearing has slight movement. When I had my e46 bmw the support bearing had completely gone and the donut wasn’t much better but didn’t cause a vibration this bad.

it is not undriveable but very noticeable and very annoying.

Gentle acceleration up a slight incline usually points to the torque converter lock up clutch.
It only does it at its worst around the 50mph mark. If I accelerate and get it lock up then slow down to about 40mph it will stay locked if I then accelerate gently it will remain locked but still won’t vibrate until 50mph

in manual mode the gearbox won’t lock in any other gear apart from 5th. None of the other modes seem any different to normal drive mode.
I’m convinced it’s either engine vibration related due to the rpm and loading or gearbox related. The speed doesn’t seem as significant as when it vibrates you can change to 4th and the vibration stops. But there is also less load on the engine and more revs so it doesn’t really rule either out.

There are those who know the more technical reaponse, but you are describing exactly the issues that lead to recon gearbox. I'd get it looked at sooner rather than later

The gearbox is fine in every other respect. I flushed the gearbox after a few hundred miles in my ownership and the fluid came out a red pink colour with no glittery fluid at all.

When vibration occurs, turn on neutral. If the vibration remains, it is necessary to look for the cause not in the gearbox

Doesn’t vibrate unless it’s in 5th with torque converter locked between 50 and 60mph.
It’s at its worse at about 55 56.

I had one outside injector in diesel fuel when I changed the injectors. After that, the vibrations became less. I was in the range of 90-94 km / h. A friend was on the RR3 with M57 vibration in the area of 70 km / h-had to fix the automatic transmission. The wear of the bronze bushings.

I’ll have to see if my diagnostics can look into the injectors. I know there is a smooth running fault. But I see this on quite a few BMWs without issue.
Do you still have the old Tranny Oil filter?
I may still have it. Are you thinking open it up and look for metal particles in it?

The injector corrections should be checked. See if the injectors themselves are wet (you can see by removing the decorative cover with the inscription land Rover). If the correction of injectors is not normal, it is necessary to check how the injectors are drained into the return line on the working engine (insert a medical syringe into each injector (6)).

On the torque Converter: remove the transmission tray and see what is floating in it: 1) Yellow-brown dust will indicate wear on the torque Converter lock. 2) Metal shavings (not dust!!!) it will indicate that the box is in very poor condition

When the torque Converter lock is worn out, it will feel like you are driving on a washboard.
Wash board is close to how I would describe it. It’s felt through the whole car and through the steering wheel. None of the injectors are wet. And under load even up hill at the same rpm in 4th. If it’s a slight hill the torque converter will remain locked in 5th below 50mph with very gentle throttle when I do this the Range Rover might only be doing 1500, 1600rpm but still torque converter locked and no vibration. I would have thought if the torque converter was knackered that putting even more load on it would bring the vibration/washboard effect.
But it is around 1800rpm at about 55mph when in 5th with the torque converter locked.

I should also add yesterday all the covers came off and the inlet manifold came off as having owned several bmw with variations of the m57 engine I know the vacuum hoses suffer. And I had a quick inspection of the injector return lines and nothing stood out on the injectors.

What is the problem: up to a certain speed of the car, the torque Converter is blocked with a slip (not 100%), after a certain speed (about 85 km / h), it closes at 100%. It skids in the mode of not full blocking. What is bad: when the friction plate wears out, the metal of the torque Converter body itself begins to wear out and metal chips go into the box and the torque Converter kills the box. Do not delay the repair. Sorry for my bad English, I'm Russian.

Que?

I'm just going to put this out there. Stop comparing your vehicle to BMWs you have had. Despite sharing some parts, the L322 is not a BMW especially the gearbox.

I think it’s a fair comparison. The engine is an m57 detuned and with a different sump other than that it’s identical. The main wiring loom is a mixture of 5 series and 7 series. The gearbox is use on the e53, e46 and e39. The gearbox software may be slightly different but not greatly. Which is why, apart from abs and air suspension I can read everything on the Range Rover and code it using my bmw diagnostics.
