Hello All !

Well had my L322 for a few months now ! touch wood no major problems LOL

I want to do a full service on it before winter - that way i know whats been serviced and that its been done properly.

I would like to change the engine oil, fuel filter, oil filter, cabin filter, air filter etc..

just a quick couple of questions... what is the correct oil type for the engine ? ? and how much will i need ? 5w 40 ?

also i want to service the gear box. As in change the oil and sump filter. is this easy enough to do ?

i understand i need to drain it and fit a new seal in the sump casing and change the filter in the bottom. can anyone tell me the correct oil and how many litres will i need ?

i understand you cant drain all the old without taking out the torque converter ?

im not too bothered about some of the old oil being in there, as long as most of it is new then im happy. did all the early TD6's have the GM boxes ?

iv also heard that its a little tricky to fill the new oil in as the filler hole is quite high up ?

can anyone give me any pointers on the service process ?

Thanks Guys :D

suggest you go and search on fullfatrr.com. All the answers to all your questions here.

There is a split decision between changing gearbox oil. If it's more than 70,000 some say it's only asking for trouble as dirt and debris get dislodged and damage the box so leave alone. If less, then deffo get it done!

I put Castrol Edge Turbo Diesel 5w40 in mine. Got it here
You need just shy of 9 litres (it should tell you in your owners manual). It's recommended you change the crankcase breather filter as well. They're about £20 and quite simple to fit.

Well Im not sure if it's ever been done ? Or if Its had a new box fitted recently ! As it's done over 136K now

For what I know I could still be on the original box !

does anyone know if the BMW upgraded cyclone crankcase breather is available for the TD6 engine ? as there was one for the freelander TD4 engine- my guess is that the TD4 one will also fit the TD6 :) ??

Bought a genuine one on e-bay. the description was 'Freelander TD4 Crankcase Breather Filter', but the main description said it also fitted the TD6. The part number quoted matched what was specified for the TD6 so I bought it and it was exactly the same as the one that came out (if a little cleaner!).

Sounds like you all ready had the new type breather fitted

there are plenty of videos on youtube showing how to check and service your transmission. I have not done it before but it looks a piece of cake.

I use a small battery powered pump made for pumping Radio Control model fuel to pump ATF fluid into the transmission where access is restricted. Dunno what the clearance (for a bottle) is like under a L322, but if you need to use a pump then I can pop up - depending in where you are in Hertfordshire. I'm twenty mins from Hertford itself.

I use a garden pressure sprayer with the lance cut off for filling gear boxes, works a treat especially since I fitted a schrader valve so I could pressurise it with my compressor.
Gearbox oil changes every 30K miles I think. Dexron III or above.
Download RAVE, it has the full service schedule.

the gm gearbox fitted to the td6 has texamatic 7045e, dont use anything else or your asking for trouble, draining and filter change is nice and easy but filling it is a pain, you will defo need anything other than a bottle, some bright spark put the front prop right across the filler bungs path.

thanks for your relys guys.

rergarding the texematic 7045e, wheres the best place to buy it ? and how many litres will i need ?

I have found it online here

20L for £60, not too bad i think, and that should be enough for me to give it a double flush ?

lastly, is it something that can be done with the car in off road mode, or does it need to be on a lift ?
thanks :D

thats about the cheapest your gonna find it, it will take around 6 litres to refill it so plenty to flush it through with there. off road setting gives plenty of room to work under it, i changed mine then ran it for a few weeks then changed it again. it took around 4 flushes to get it nice and clean though, well worth the effort in my opinion though. oh your gonna get nice and oiley under there, good luck.:D
