There are two rangeys I've got my eye on.

4.2 super duper wuper charged petrol, and a 3.0 td6.

The 4.2 Will be thirstier, but which in your opinions would be the more problematic? And why?

Once purchased I'll be taking it abroad for 2 years.

Everyone loves the supercharger, Elfreetutu always gets comments on his.
Engine wise the straight 6 is more reliable (I am extremely diesel biased don’t ya know)

With a RR potential issues may have more to do with transmission or electrical than the engine itself. Then there’s the engine could cause issues too....

The 3.0 TD6 is an alright motor but it is thirsty and underpowered, coupled with the shyte gearbox you really don't have a good combo, also considering the early L322's are more prone to rot and electrical faults i'd steer well clear..

The AJV8 4.2 is my favoured engine due to the fact it is far better built and paired to a far better 6spd gearbox, the latter cars are also better built in many other aspects IMO..

With forged rods and crank + Jaguars VVT it hauls ass and will return 18 to 30mpg if driven nicely. slip her into S and hoof it you'll get 400hp and the fuel consumption associated with that ;)

There can be diesel bias, but in reality with the 18- 27mpg the TD6 will usually return you'd have to be a loon to consider it..
 
What was in you 110 John? ;)

You bought it to do work therefore it was a .....
Was an Oil Burner... but it was a 110 and they don't count, as well you know.

The also don't like being oil burners and display their displeasure by leaking any oil they have inside them all over the drive / road / car park / floor.
 
I am led to understand that the Jaaaggggg engine ones have a light on the dash that come on when it senses you are enjoying your vehicle and it wants to bring you back down to earth and empty your bank account on some sensor that has no purpose whatsoever other than to go wrong...

In this way, JLR & Mercedes are almost identical in operation.
 
The jag motor doesn't leak ;)

The M57 leak oil from the inlet manifold area which is the swirl flaps and their assosiated gaskets, turbos can go too.. ;)

The V8 is also believe it or not more economical, ;)
 
Hi just wanted to add to the conversation (albeit a bit late) I test drove a Khan modified 3.0 td6 when looking to replace my first 4.2 SC that ended it’s useful life upside down on the A1 and that diesel engine was all noise and no go. Personally I can’t see any comparison engine and performance wise between your selection. I ended up with another 4.2 SC because it’s all Range Rover with super car performance. Yes it’s thirsty when you floor it but driven sensibly and 15mpg in city traffic or 22 - 26mpg on the motorway with almost total silence from the engine thanks to the 6 speed box.
Test drive an SC and I doubt you will buy a td6. Just remember to test every button and function to avoid any surprises because there are no cheap spares or repair jobs on and SC.
