Right....

After upgrading to the MKIV sat nav, which was supposed to be a relatively easy upgrade I experienced a few problems. After extensive searching I managed to find a fix but have yet to test it properly and could do with some feedback/advice.
But first I need to document the history of this project and steps taken to get to where I am now....

So here goes:

1) Located a used MKIV from a write off BMW Mini for £125.:D

2) Used the superb site from Matt Stevenson, www.myrangerover.co.uk, to download the latest firmware (V32) ISO and wrote that to CD. Also downloaded the 2010 Maps ISO and wrote that to dual layer DVD. Followed Matt's instructions to the letter.

3) Swapped out my old MKIII for the MKIV and ejected the disc that was already in the unit. Strangely it was a 2004 Mini Maps CD and not a DVD. I didn't think much of this at this stage.

4) Inserted the newly written firmware CD and proceeded to update the unit. No problems with this. :)

5) Ejected the firmware CD and inserted the newly written DVD into the unit, only to be met with the 'no CD/DVD in drive'. Damn....not good news. Maybe the DVD didn't burn properly.....:(

6) Burnt a fresh copy of the maps DVD at the slowest speed on a Verbatim Dual Layer DVD. Inserted it in the drive and......'no CD/DVD in drive'......Damn....Damn...:(:(

7) After a bit if searching on the net.....possible problem that the laser lens on the unit is knackered.....Damn...Damn...DAMN:mad:
Also the fact that the MKIV unit had a CD based map disk in it, rather than a DVD, lends to the possibility of a faulty laser lens.

8) A bit more searching and I came across this blog. DIY for changing the laser unit in a MK4 sat nav unit - Xoutpost.com.
Okay, so I need to order a new SF-HD4 black cap lens (the white cap lens is CD lens only).

9) New lens arrives in post. Set about dismantling the MKIV DVD unit and swap the lens over.....very very easy job if you have steady hands. Total cost £40 inc delivery.

10) Insert the maps DVD into the drive and......'no CD/DVD in drive'...!!!! For fcuks sake!:mad:

So this is where I'm stuck and could do with some advice guys...

I'm thinking maybe the drive doesn't like copies re the maps DVD's?
Maybe I need an original BMW maps DVD?
Maybe I should bite the bullet and get a maps DVD off somewhere like
https://bmwnavigation.co.uk/road-map-high-europe-2014/ ?

How easy is it to copy a map disc??

I could copy mine in my Mk4 and post over and see if that works??!!

Thanks for the offer buddy...

I believe they need to be written to a decent dual layer DVD...something like Verbatim...
Not exactly sure if it can just be copied....Will do some checks and get back to you?

So a quick update guys..

Took a chance and ordered the 2014 maps DVD from:
https://bmwnavigation.co.uk/road-map-high-europe-2014/

The chap also did me a custom splash screen with my company logo...

Bottom line.....

FANTASTIC!

All is good now.....

Attached picture of new splash screen also....
