Hi, went out this morning..wife phoned me and said there was a large wet patch where the Rangie was parked...i said it may have been the washer bottle as i filled it before i left...when i was on the way home..got to my road..then started to lose power...had the warning flash up on dash TRANS FAILSAFE PROG...as i got to my house...had barely enough power to park up...switched her off...restarted..went into gear fine..backwards and forwards fine..then after a few seconds..power went again, thought about what wifey said about wet patch..got a torch and looked under the car..spotted green fluid dripping onto the crossmember area...anyone know where the leak or cause would be before i let RR pull my pants down...AGAIN.

could be leaking anywhere out of gearbox, probably out of the bottom sump underneath the gearbox.

now how much damage has been done to your gearbox ?

if your interested, put car into off road mode (high) and crawl underneath to see exacly where its leaking

Thanks Hippo, had my brother under there earlier (hes much skinnier than myself)...but it was dark etc...he removed the filler nut and there was still fluid coming out of there, and of course its still leaking from where ever it has decided to come from...how will i know if damage has been caused to the box ?

Green fluid is antifreeze red fluid (or dirty brown) is auto trans fluid

My anti freeze is bright red ??

Not sure about what damage has been done, most probably overheated due to the lack of oil. All you can do is flush it out once w
With the correct oil, fill it up again and try it out. Check to see for any metallic shavings in the old oil

Never seen green ATF? Is that a special fluid for the GM autobox?

It looked green, but it was dark and i was useing a torch...i need to get under her and find out where it is coming from, but all i can see is it is dripping right onto the crossmember and i have no gears....so put two and two together...and probably came up with 5...lol

As ovalandrover said, the fluid used in the GM 5L40-E transmission in the TD6 (Texaco Texamatic 7045E) starts off life red in colour

could this be ac gas leaking out there is a drain outlet near the gearbox in the crossmember area for water to drain from the air con system , if the ac gas has a leak detector in it like mine its green ?

ok, this is now becoming a mystery...i may have been mistaken about the colour...will need to check in daylight..so first thing in the morning will get up and get underneath her to have a good look...i have read a lot of your posts sir...and you seem to be the man of knowledge with all things related to the transmission...do you have any thoughts regarding what happened to my Rangie before i let RR get their greedy little hands on her ?.....ie, common issues etc ????
any help or advice would be greatfully appreciated fella.

been under her this morning...the green fluid is a diesel leak that is running down the engine and dripping where the transmission box meets the engine....no transmission fluid anywhere at all, the sump is bone dry all round...im now completely stumped, and not being mechanically minded...it is being recovered to RR in the morning to go on the diagnostics machine..to read the fault that showed up when the drive went...the service guy said it dont sound promising and as there is no sign of a transmission fluid leak...why would it need topping up ?.somehow, i just know this is going to hurt big time.

When you say in your original post that the ‘power went’ do you mean something happened to the engine or merely that the transmission locked in 5th gear (which it should do if it displays the TRANS FAILSAFE PROG message)?

Irrespective of what’s leaking you need to drain some fluid from the transmission and see if it looks like it has glitter in it. The 5L40-E in the L322 has a life-expectancy of 80k to 100k miles before the valve blocks wear to the extent that the spools leak/cross-talk, the hydraulic pressures drop and the torque converter lock-up clutch wears through its lining and starts to generate huge quantities of metallic debris. Transmission failure is then imminent.

yes.it was the transmission that went, not engine power...everything you said makes no sense at all to me..im just a humble lorry driver..lol, if that is what has accured here..what am i looking at ?...am i right to pressume a new box ?

Most likely a recon box if you want any money left in the bank lol

Hi, had the same problem myself just before Christmas. Trans fail prog message then no drive and had to be recovered from Devon. Spoke to a couple of people I know at Land Rover and they recommended a company called Transmission Technology in Solihull. They arranged collection of the vehicle, removed and reconditioned the gearbox fitted a new torque convertor for a little under £1400 with a 2 year warranty. It appeared my torque converter ate itself and the resulting swarf killed the box. It seems that after 80k miles you are on borrowed time. They guy who runs Transmission Technology is Ken Snead and they can be contacted on 01564 779407. They really understand these boxes and are very helpful.
Best of Luck. Regards Ian

Thanks for all the advice guys...but after checking the prices etc...i think its a case of scrapping her and starting again...ive thrown far too much money at her as it is, not to mention a £4000 set of wheels last month...damn shame as shes a good looking old girl.

thanks again people.
