Hi, just joined & looking for a bit of help.

Anyone know if the early 2002~4 auto gearbox ecus are coded to the car or are they interchangeable?

Cheers

Not sure, but I think they are interchangeable mainly because SO MANY of the early boxes were replaced under warrantry but no mention of ecu change in recall/fault hsitory.

Cheers, at the moment the symptoms are... looking at a replacement for my Jeep & noticed how 'gearboxy' rangerovers of a certain age are I was wondering if BMW's habit of coding all the ECUs was going to be an issue.

The gm and it's valve block fitted to the l322 and x5 bmw weren't the greatest of manufacturing choices unfortunately.. Zf all-day long👍
Well, old zf4hp22/24 for sure

Thanks, I've been looking at the gearbox options, the 5L40 seems to be very weak and nobody makes any upgrades for it apart from boring the valve body and putting oversized spools in.

One 'upgrade' is to remove said box from the vehicle and fling it off Beachy Head, then fit a manual box from an X3 like some enterprising chap on here did.
Certainly an interesting idea, I was eyeing up the v8 ZF, if the controllers aren't coded then it's 5' of wiring loom and an adaptor plate... lovely big torque converter and a box with the rating for the engine, perfect for hauling my caravan around the country.
But as I haven't even bought a Range Rover yet and my Jeeps diff is laying on my work bench in small parts it is a back burner plan.
