Hello all,

I'm having a bit of an issue with my front right brake caliper. It seems to stick occasionally, refusing to release without the aid of serious force. My local landy specialist seems to have sorted it for now, but said that if it sticks again they would recommend a new caliper, which seems fair enough.

Anyway my question is - has anyone replaced the OE calipers on their L322 (02-05 model) with aftermarket ones? If so which did you got for and are they better?

I can't afford to stick £4000> brembo GT kit on, but I'm finding it hard to find anything out there other than the OE ones (which are quite hard to find in themselves incidently - seems discs etc are common, but calipers are sold by very few companies). Wondering if anyone knows of anything decent out there without braking the bank? I'm not necessarily looking for something cheaper than LR replacement ones, I just thought that often when replacing a part aftermarket ones can be better for the same amount whereas 'genuine' parts (in my opinion) are often a bit of a rip off for what they are. Thoughts....

Just another related question - anyone know if the L322 calipers are the same as those on an X5? They have BMW written on them. Yet RR ones cost £169 per side whilst X5 ones are only £65 - are we being seen off here!?!

Why on earth would anyone in their right mind fit a £4000.00 set of brakes to a vehicle who's brakes are very capable as standard. Being ripped off? Maybe. Worth finding out i would think.
 
Well I would imagine people buying a new top spec RR wouldn't mind the extra 4k on top of the 65+ they are already spending, hence the number of companies now like overfinch, kahn, revere etc who will happily part you with 10s of thousands for various bit and bobs if that is the sort of thing you like. However, we digress, what I really want to know is if there are any 'normal' priced alternatives or whether BMW parts can be used?
 
I've just bought a remanufactred set for my '87 Sierra Cosworth from Bigg Red. They operate on an exchange basis and for your cash you get a set of calipers that have had all seals & pistons replaced, and can be in a range of finishes to your requirements. I was looking at £50 per side for a set of seals and £15 + for a piston. These are 4 pot calipers, so I was looking at getting on for £200 just for the parts, and I'd still have to do it myself. I paid £158 (plus refundable exchage deposit) for two refurbed calipers for the Cossie, and they really do look the part. If they don't have them in stock, they'll refurb your own calipers and send them back to you. Could be worthwhile giving them a call...

Gave them a call and they can recondition mine and give them a nice paint job (although don't provide new ones) for about £130 for a pair, so not too bad. Although would mean car is off the road for a week unless I fancy driving without brakes!

Anyone else know of anyone else out there? On another note, I have noticed the supercharged models of the same era as mine came with brembo's as standard, anyone know if they can be fitted to Vogues or the same age?
 
Just thought I'd give this a bump to see if anyone had any idea about the BMW calipers that L322s use.

I've called a BMW dealership, but because there is only a 5 digit number on the caliper (that I can see anyway), they couldn't tell me what the part number in full was and what it was the same as (ie. X5 or something else). I'm fairly certain it must be the same as some BMW out there as they are unlikely to have made custom brakes for the RR given the size of their parts bin and model ranges and they are alot cheaper and more readily available than LR ones which have got double mark up on.

Anyone out there know anything more?

p.s. for those who have ever wondered if you can put supercharged L322 bigger brakes onto a standard Vogue/HSE the answer is NO unless you change all sort of other things too and huge expense.

I've had a look at your link and compared it to this

They appear to be the same. I have also compared pictures of X5 4.4 calipers for sale around the internet with my own calipers and again they look exactly the same as far as I can see.

Anyway I'm going to buy one and chance it. If it all goes tits up then its my fault, if not then I've saved £100!

Did you get anywhere with the BMW caliper for a Range Rover L322.

I need a O/S/F caliper and was hoping to save some dosh!

Can't say yet- I have the part but unfortunately stuck in hosp at the moment after taking on an artic lorry with my motorbike - unsurprisingly I lost and now I'm getting screws in my leg!! :(

When I get out and get around to fixing my car/learning to drive with left foot only then I'll let you know.
 
Cheers mate, should be ok- a few feet different and I'd have probably died, so at the moment my mind isn't really on the Rangie, although reading the forums is keeping me occupied in an otherwise boring as hell hospital bed!!
 
Haven't even seen the bike, no idea where it landed, but I'm fully expecting it to be a complete write off. Its a secondary worry right now and to be honest I'm not sure I'd want to get back on a bike after this has happened, feels like I've used up all my luck being alive this time already!

I'm pretty sure the brake pads were the same on mine, so I would imagine the calipers are too.
Sorry to hear about your bike crash too, it's never nice coming off, even more so when there's a lorry involved.
