Ramp helps massively and to be honest the transmission isn't as complicated as i would have thought but i did have RRPhil (Bemble) on tap at the time and he is probably the country's most experienced person on the ZF range rover box.
The problem with buying a second hand box is you don't know if its as nearly as bad as yours.
There is a write up from Phil around that shows how to strip the ZF5HP24 which we followed and apart from a few special tools we made up quite easily it's not that bad to strip down completely. The valve block is the main unknown and i sent that to Phil and he stripped it and tested it just for fun !
All the parts down to the smallest pin are available.

We made up a large clean bench and just laid the parts out in a line as they came out and then stripped and rebuilt each lump. it comes apart in large clutch packs
This is pretty much all that is in it from memory

we made these tools to compress the clutch springs

and i was particularly proud of our homemade bench press circa 1782..
