Hi, new on here but I think help is seriously needed. We've had our 03 RR vogue for just over a year now and had no problems with the car it's been brilliant!! Now though it seems we have problems everywhere. I would appreciate any help I'm stuck!!

So it started with the#cd player#since we've had it the stereo has cut out a handful of times but kicked back in again on the next time the car was used. A couple of weeks ago we were out and about and the screen went blank (music still playing), the screen came back on again after a matter of seconds. It then did it a few more times and the last time the screen came on the screen went a lighter shade of blue with a bigger font and some options had gone off the screen. I think one was the DSP. It stayed like that for the rest of the day, I thought it was having a funny five minutes. The next time the car was used the screen went blank but I could still use the radio and#cd player#( by memory!!). I took all the connections out to have a look in the rear passenger side of the boot. I think the ones in the amp were wet and had corroded. I dried them and scraped the corrosion off. Put it all back in again and nothing. The thing that makes me think the screen isn't broken is there's still the back light on. If it was broken would that still be lit up?? I also checked the fuses in the glove box none are missing or broken. But after I looked at the fuses the drivers side chair has stopped working. It is now stuck in my wife's position. It sometimes makes the clicking as if it's going to move but doesn't do anything, sometimes the seat can move forward or back but literally a mm at a time! Also the steering wheel for the last week when the key was put in the ignition and turned on the steering wheel moved down. I could stop it with the steering wheel control. This has since stopped but still cannot move the seat. The next thing is after having another look today at the fuses and the amp in the boot after disconnecting the battery I started the car back up again and I get a warning to put the car in neutral, the car starts fine and there's no problems with moving in between p,r,n,d but as soon as I move off I get slow down. This flashes once then disappears.#
What has happened? Are all of these connected it seems like they must be but I can't see how!
Thanks
Kyle

Right so lets list:

  • Dodgy Stereo
  • Blank Screen
  • Lost DSP
  • Wet Units in Rear Quarter
The wet units are a sure sign of the problem, whilst you dried and cleaned the connections, ods on that moisture has found its way into one or more the units in there...most likely the BM54 unit (big silver box!)

Try removing Fuse 49 for 30 minutes, sometimes this hard reset has offered a solution....if that fails, pull the units out and check them THOROUGHLY for damp and moisture....

Also, sometimes, when disconnecting the battery, if the Sat Nav unit is still awake it can corrupt the drive and blank the screen....you MUST wait 3 minutes and for the red light on the drive to go out before disconnecting the battery!

Try waiting for the Sat Nav drive lamp to go out, then pull the connections to it, if the screen comes back...bingo was his name-o

Remember if you open a door or tailgate, this resets the drive and you have to wait another 3 minutes!

Search the forum, this was dealt with only a few weeks I go I think!

  • Stuck Chair
  • Iffy Steering Wheel Movement

All these are controlled via the Seat ECU, maybe take the side switch panel off, they have been known to get wet due to open windows or when getting in and out during a rain storm! Some ELECTRICAL CONTACT CLEANER (not WD40) may help on the switches.

Search the forum, this came up recently!

  • Select Neutral Message
  • Slow Down Message

This means the the transfer box is trying to change ratios....it could be the switch pack on the transfer motor is breaking down (brittle plastic) trouble is they aren't available seperatly, and the motor is silly money new.....now it seems odd it happened after disconnecting the battery, I can only think the transfer box ECU is confused, diagnostics may help on that one!

The Slow Down message is given because ratio changes can only happen below a certain speed, if you are at a standstill and this message pops up, time for diagnostics again...could just be a glitch in the CAN databus.

Diagnostics are a good way forward on all the issues....but do the basics first...strong battery, good alternator charge etc....

Trying to diagnose a Range Rover without checking for good electrical power is fool-hardy!

Hi, thanks for replying so quickly. So this today the husband spent a LONG time trying to sort these problems and we have ended up getting nowhere!! : ( so we started by taking the silver bmw box out (after doing all the necessary bits with the batter and waiting for the light on the sat navigation To go out). The box had no signs of corrosion or wear on or inside it looked brand new! Reconnected everything sprayed with the cleaning spray on beforehand and still nothing. The screen itself when you turn the ignition changes colour almost like a flicker to a grey but nothing no light comes on and the orange power button stii doesn't come on. I had a read on here about the wet getting in the back. The only bit was on the amp whrre they were quite badly corroded.. so would it be a thought that the amp is knackered but the screen is ok?

Next was the seat. So after taking the seat console off (sorry i don't know if that's the right name for it) he then had a look at the connections that go into the seat switches and they all look clean no dirt or anything in them. Which was a bit of a bummer as I was hoping that could of been the reason. He also started to look at the steering column while he was there and took the wood panelling off on the right of the steering wheel and the plastic underneath on the steering column itself to look at the wires and connections. What we noticed was the wiring connecting into the steering wheel was cable tied up I read someone trying to do a fix and cable ties worked. When he looked behind the leatger panel hanging off the steering wiring loom there were three plugs connected to nothing a large 15/20 pin one and two 3 pin ones! We have no idea where they are for!! We then ran out of time I had to do the school run. Patched it up enough to use got back and when I got back we started again. Kyle moved the switches and we got a movement forward.. It cut in and out a lot but we managed to get the forward, backward and the back part of the seat moving. It actually did a smooth movement rather than mm by mm. But it's not consistent. We can get hold of a working seat switch. Would this be the right thing to do or to look at a new motor for it?

Any help would be great
Claire

The screen is just that, an interface for the radio module ( bm54 ) and the sat nav. It's not unknown for the pcd to fail in these maybe helped by a spike from a wet amp. This would explain why the radio still works although you have no display. As Saint says, interrupting the power to the nav drive when it's doing its thing is fatal.

Sorry if I've confused you. The radio doesn't work. We don't get any sound or anything from it its just when the initio is turned the screen stays blank just goes a lighter shade. I think by the sounds of it husband has buggered it. He read a few different posts about the screen going blank and taking fuse 39 out but only when Saint said about leaving it alone until the red light goes out which he never did. So... would the next step be to buy a new screen and amp or one or the other or more? As you can tell it's all new trying to get info from people who know what they are talking about ( more than myself)

which silver box ? the larger one is tv tuner which controls video & display, the slimmer one (bm54) controls audio. if you have no orange light on head unit at all the most likely cause will be a faulty bm54/wiring/plug

Yeah we took the silver bm54 box out.. All looked ok with it though. If this was the case and this was the bit that was broken we have a friend with a 5 series if he has the same bm 54 box we could try that and see if t works. My husband doesn't think he left enough time for the red light to go out though and the sat navigation unit would this now be a problem too?

Hi, thanks I've had a little look and seen a few repair companies on ebay.. so thinking if we try and disconnect the sat navigation and try that first and then I think the next thing to do is to get the bm54 unit sent off and see if it is that that's broken. Fingers crossed for that being the issue it would be easier if that fixed it : )

I've also been looking on here at the allcomms diagnostics. Would this be a good choice of diagnostics to get? A mate of my husbands works at a garage so can get to a diagnostics but I think getting one for ourselves would be a good idea.. is the all comms a good one to go for? Especially with trying to get this select neutral warning to clear!!

All Comms is a brilliant piece of kit for the price, I have it and so do a few others on here.

The legend that is Storey Wilson (the guy who designed and made the All Comms) is a true gent and his support if you have an issue with his product is second to none.

If you have the cash, consider the Faultmate Extreme by Blackbox solutions...will set you back nearly a £1000 but it is truly the most capable and utterly brilliant piece of diagnostic gear...if I had the money I'd have one in a shot...without question or hesitation!

Make sure your guy at his garage has a diagnostic solution that is geared up for Land Rover as everything bar the engine ECU is proprietary Land Rover protocols, hence why the All Comms and Faultmate etc are so widely promoted on here as they are able to fully communicate with all the systems on the Range Rover.

Put your location in your profile, you may live close to a member on here who has the All Comms that you can take a look at!

Thanks for the reply.. I think it'd be the Allcomms we would get. But of an update the seat is again working. The memory settings aren't but you can move the seat again now. Husband said he was gonna oil the motor and put some more of the electrical cleaner on the switches.. bit of a pain we just move it to my position so if it gets stuck as I'm the main driver I can drive it : ) The next step is to send the bm54 box off see if this is the problem. Read quite a lot of people saying how roughly around 50% of these bm54 units will break!!
