Hi

have a problem with the beast and am a bit stuck
yesterday i noticed the coolant level in the header tank was a bit low
just under the low level line
never mind have some in garage so topped it up
this afternoon went out and ( not far 16 km ) and dropped the wife off to get her nails done
as it was hot had the clime on at max, so arrived and parked,,sat there reading a book waiting for her
maybe half an hr not more
when i started the car to return home got a low coolant level alarm
stopped the engine to look
there was nothing in the header tank,, lucky there is alway some bottled water in the boot so
topped it up took 1 ltr ( a whole bottle )
drove home no alarms engine seemed to be ok ,, no smoke or steam out of exhaust
but the level was down between the 2 lines on the header tank.
have a icarsoft reader so connected it up
the only fault was was on the air con page
it said
Recirculation Damper Motor Code B1083
now i am stumped cos i aint got a clue what they are talking about

anyone have an idear ????
i forgot to mention its the 3.0 SDV6

Sounds like there is a leak somewhere, look for coolant stains back of block etc.

Is there a second part to your code, eg -11, -12, or such like?

no thats all it gives
it the icarsoft LR V2.0 reader

i am not familier with this car
only had Defenders and the old facelift Freelanders before
bought it a couple og months ago, and its been running ok till now
even did a 800 km trip and return, no problem
never had to put any liquid in it before
and its the first time had the air con on max
one thing i notice is the fan starts as soon as the car starts,( the local abbient temp is 38 ) not sure it should do that ??
i can turn the fan easy buy hand, someone told me that i shouldt be able to do that and i need a new fan at moment cant find any info about that point
there also seems to be a lot of air in the system, engine was stripped and rebuilt just before i bought it
wondering if the AC system was not bleed correct have been at it a couple of hrs today and the air in the return is not so much at moment
letting it stand for a hour to see what happens

If there is air in the coolant system, that might account for the drop in coolant level. There is no bleeding for the Aircon system.
The viscous fan should turn by hand when cold, it's locks up with heat.
I would not expect the aircon fans to come on when the car starts, the engine driven fan should always turn with the engine running unless it is electronically controlled as on some versions.
Might be worth getting a sniff test on the coolant especially as the engine has been rebuilt.

Don 't know if this helps any, or makes it worse :
B1083:11 - Recirculation Damper Motor: Circuit Short to Ground B1083:12 - Recirculation Damper Motor: Circuit Short to Battery B1083:13 - Recirculation Damper Motor: Circuit Open

found this
not much help at moment cos i need to find what each element is and where located
ie Recirculation Damper Motor ( is this the viscus fan ?)
the door to this item ?? what is the door ? do thet mean the thermostate

B1083- 01 Recirculation Damper Motor -
General electrical failure Foreign object obstructing recirculation door
Recirculation motor circuit short to ground, short to power, open circuit
Recirculation door damaged
Recirculation motor failure Automatic temperature control module failure Check and remove any obstruction in the recirculation door
Refer to the electrical circuit diagrams and test the recirculation motor circuit for short to power, open circuit Install a new recirculation door as necessary
Install a new recirculation motor as necessary
Install a new automatic temperature control module as necessary

i dont think so ??
this model was only out for 1 year i think
2012/2013 then it changed
it is a bit of a bitsa
the chassie and rolling stock engine /gearbox is the Dico L3/L4
with a sport body
the engine is the sdv6 3.0 same as the disco

possibly the rave for the dico would be ok for the mechanical parts
but the electrics and ECU thats another story

think the header tank cap is dead
dont seem to be getting any pressure in system , even after a run round the block
can just twist it off no pressure release
water is running back into the tank and now here is no air (at the moment)
the stealers have a place just up the road 5 mins
will see if i can get a new cap tomorrow and test again
going to take the botom plates off this afternoon and give it a clean and see if i can see anything there
there is a small oil drip over night i need to check on anyway

Have you checked?

have downloaded the workshop manual 2005 2013 5 sections
the car is covered in this , but termenology is not the same
there is no mention of Recirculation Damper Motor in the step by step guides
althou it is mentioned in the DTC section, thats the B1083 code i pasted above
but there is no picture to identifie the part referenced
the water pump is refered to as just thatz
the viscus fan ??

maybe i need to contact icarsoft and ask them what s ment by recirculation damper motor
that thier box is throwing a fault on
mind you this afternoon it dumped a coolant puddle on the floor of garage
tried to get the bottom skid pans of to have a look but cant budge the studs, mainly cos no room hen laying flat under the car
to get a good pull on them probably done up with a windy hamer

update

this morning sarted the car and let it run
coolant level never went down over night
running on tick over with cabin heater set at 28 degree
after 10 mins fan started to increase speed as temp came up but i think thats normal no ram effect car not moving
monitored coolant temp and oil temp with icarsoft box, nothing out of the norm
no sign of any leak
after 20 mins switched cabin heater from heat to air con 16degree
3 mins later steady water drip from back skid plate ( the rear one of the 2 )
will have to try and get this bloody plate off as a last result will cut the heads of
no as if i am going off road can always get the stud ends out later when i can get it up on ramp

Mike

yes but thats just condensation
this is not just a drip its a loss of coolant
managed to get one plate off
cleaned every thing i could reach under there
while doing this i knocked a heat sheild on the passanger side
looks like its to keep heat away from foot well
anyway a lot of coolant came out, so the leak is up there somewere
only thing i can think of is that its the heater core !!?
and that is a big job , complete front consul out i think
anyone got any info about this ??

this after noon take off this heat sheild and get further up into the car

You didnt say it was coolant you said it was water ;)
Hopefully with a torch you'll be able to see the stain where its leaking from. I dont know anything about the V6 engine but would imagine there's plenty of things on the cooling system that could leak, like fuel cooler, FBH etc etc

hi kev12
well if you notice the subject was coolant !!
it starting to **** me off
spent all day under there taking of plates and heat shields to try and find the leak
cleaned it all down
running engine several times for half hour - with ac running and again with heating running
not a dikky bird of a drip any more
coolant level dint budge
so took it out for a run 10 km mostly 30-50 speed limits around hear and at moment a lot of traffic
so just running easy 15 mins
arived back at house, steady drip not quite a run
coolant level down half inch below the lower mark on header tank with engine stopped, was up at top mark when i left
its now 6 at night so locked it up for the night
but a quick look underneath it seemed to be coming from high up behind the passanger side baulk head
so suspect heater core
