L series RPM at 70mph in 5th?

Hi all, could any L series drivers out there tell me what RPM theirs is doing at 70mph on a normal, flat dual carriageway/motorway in 5th?

I've just had the gearbox replaced on mine (old one was grinding and jumping out of reverse). All seems OK (reverse is perfect!) but it seems to rev a little higher now - prior to the box replacement the car would do about 3000rpm at 70mph, the new one seems higher (around 3,500rpm) - is there any adjustment to be made or does it bed in?

Clutch was not replaced but its fine (and was replaced about 12months/10k miles ago).

Any advice would be appreciated.

mine sits at around 3000rpm doing 70, gearbox wont bed in it must have a different 5th ratio. My concern would be that if the 5th ratio is different is the diff ratio correct? Is the box the correct box for your freelander?

You have the k series box fitted. Different gear ratio. Put bigger tyres on it and it will even out

I assume so otherwise the ird would need to be different because the back wheels would be going a different speed than the front.

It was a used box but sold as being for a L series - is there a code stamped on it anywhere I can check? (I still have the old box)

Is it possible to fit the wrong type of gearbox?, are they not different?

Hence the reason I asked, I wasn't sure if the ird was the same for the petrol cars. So it's all good then

I always thought the irds and diffs were the same for L series and k series pre 2003. The ird ratios changed in 2003 to stop the expensive breakages. I think the post 2003 diffs had different bearings in aswell

Not 100% sure as I am going on memory with little sleep and after a couple of beers.

There must be a number on it somewhere, where I don't know. Maybe a date stamp too.

The gearboxes are both pg1 boxes which have many uses in different vehicles. They just have different gear ratios. Don't forget a Freelander engine is the same that is out on many other rovers but just a ird bolted on the back to allow drive to the rear wheels. The engine has a few other things here and there like bolt holes but essentially they are the same

mine suffers with the same issue matey.

i just put on some bigger 195 80 16 tyres and it dropped the revs by about 400 rpm at 70. I dont feel so bad cruising on the motorway now

i still want a proper l series box though, as the gear ratios are all wrong and it makes the car noticeably slower because the powerband is too narrow

Kizzeh - you advised fitting bigger tyres, mine has the 16" wheels with 215/65 tyres - did you mean bigger tyres or the wheels too?

Got one in the shed. You can probably find one closer to you though

The L series that I have just sold used to hover at 2800 to 3000 at 70mph depending on headwind

I have one you can have if you are around kings Lynn area at any time, was replaced but turned out not to be the problem. Has around 150, 000 on it but still ok (as it turned out).

2600 rpm iirc
