L series pump timing!

It will start easy with 3 glow plugs so i wouldnt have bothered to do that. Mine is starting on first attempt with 3 plugs in temps like -25C. Its not exactly easy to gain access to the 4th.

I would have checked my plugs with a clamp type ammeter to see if they are actually drawing any Ah's. Just to be sure..

The coolant sensor might be bad so the ECU thinks the engine are warmer than it is? How long are your LED lit and what are the outside temperature?

When youre trying to start the car tomorrow. Try to pump the primer bulb hard before starting. If starts without any problem after priming its a air leak into the system.

Try to clean the starter, it might be gummed up?

Can a clamp ammeter read DC, I thought just AC ?...

Yeah you get DC Clamp meters as well. Mine reads both. Its a very handy tool to have when working on cars.

well Ive checked the glow plug on number 4 and its faulty I also checked the temp sender and that was reading as having too much resistance so Ive replaced the sender and I will have to change number 4 if needs be!

well Ive changed the temp sender and its no different, it certainly is becoming a puzzler. I think I am going to have to go back to basics and check the timing with the pins instead of timing the cam by eye and start from there!

It is not really a big puzzle if you didnt use the pins. There is no way you can sight this by eye. Also rotate the engine a few rounds to double check with the pins to see if youre on or off.

You can use a 9.5mm drill bit for the FIP pump and a 6.5mm for the crank.

BTW: 9mm and 6mm wont do it.

Thanks for the info, last time I used a pin in the pump but just had a quick look at the cam to see if it was on the mark. I can't get to a ramp until Monday so I'll use the crank pin and check the FIP properly then!

Hi Guys

Sorry for highjacking this tread, but i am on the verge of petrol bombing my wifes 1999 L-series 2.0Lt diesel.

This thing has been down on power for the last year and i have allready overhauled the motor, done the Turbo, replaced ALL the hoses, done the injectors and had it at a Landy dealer to do an diagnostic, but they could not find anything.

Please Help
Jacques

Well Ive checked the timing with the pins and its fine! What a pain it is to get the crank pin in! I'm getting a bit stuck for ideas now, I think the next thing to do is change the No 4 glow plug just so I can rule it out but I don't think it's that. All ideas are very welcome!!

well just a quick update for those that might be a bit interested I have changed No 4 glow plug today I did it by removing the control unit on top of the pump, just as a bit of interest for bosvark when I replaced the control unit I adjusted it slightly and the car drives a lot better even though I didn't think it was that bad before there was a noticeable difference in power. So fingers crossed for the morning!!

well I started her up this morning and there was a massive improvement still not starting first click but definitely 10 times better and liveable with! :)
