kv6 thermosate change?

hi all

i have a 2002 2,5 v6 freelander (auto)

ive taken the manifold (inlet) off as it had the rattle of death (im just modding that as we speak,or trying too lol)

thing is the last owner said he thought the head gasket had gone ,which to be honest im thinking maybe not

theres no water in the oil ,nore oil in the water ,he said the water in his header tank was bubbling and going down slowly

but i think the water bubbling was more the water returning back to the header tank and as for loosing water over time

after taking the inlet manifold off and looking down ,in the v of the gubings down there it looks much like water has been leaking from what i assume is the thermostate housing !!!!

is this a common fault and is there a guide on here to change the housing ???

Very common leak point on the KV6. There's a guide on X POWER Forum iirc. It's a pain to get at the thermostat and it almost always breaks off at the block face. It's an O ring type seal that allows a small amount of coolant to leak past over time. This coolant causes corrosion of the aluminium locking the thermostat solidly in place. You end up breaking the thermostat out and carefully extracting the remnants. Fit the new thermostat kit with silicone plumber's grease and the problem goes away.

thanks for reply i assume seeing my inlet is off right now being modded i may aswell wait to rebuild the engine bits till ive replaced the housing

(also am i right in thinking as the last owner thought loose of water over time was hgf ,this infact could be the problem of loosing coolant esp seeing oil etc shows no signs of hgf)

any ideas best but cheapest place to buy one?
(ive read on the rover forum that the rover 75 one does not fit and the landrover one is better)

If the V shows signs of coolant, then I would think that is the likely to be the cause of coolant loss. Provided the engine hasn't been allowed to run out of coolant, you might have an easy fix.

I've fitted the Rover thermostat to the Freelander V6. However it's not a straight swap. The Freelander uses quick release connectors, the Rover version uses worm clips.
I'd fit the Land Rover thermostat if you can find one at a sensible price.

I always thought that the MGZT R75 7 the FL 1 V6 thermostats were compatible ?

Thermostat V6 190 leak & re-fitting - The 75 and ZT Owners Club Forums

The thermostats between the KV6 used in Rover applications and the thermostat used in the Freelander KV6 are different as is the elbow pipe. The link pipe is the same for both Rover and LR KV6 variants.
The difference is slight but there all the same. Like I mentioned above, the LR uses quick release connectors but there's another difference. The heater feed on the LR thermostat exits above the bottom hose connection. On the Rover stat, the heater feed is below the bottom hose connection. This is something to do with bleed screw location differences, as far as I can tell, anyway.
It's better to get the genuine LR thermostat.
