Had a bit of an issue this morning.

When I tried to start, got the fuel pump noise, then just the solenoid click but no starter.
Did the same for the next 5-6 tries.
Was just about to go for the WD40 when on the last try it started as if nothing was wrong.

Did the same when I went to start this evening.

I know the 1.8 starter cables can fray which can cause something similar, but is this a known issue on the V6?
Or possibly just a damp starter?

Thanks Nodge.
Can't get to it to check at the mo, I'll have a look when I get time to remove the engine cover.
(Bit of a pain getting the air hose on and off)
It isn't urgent right now, but I suspect it will only get worse.

Just had a poke around. Didn't need to remove the cover.
The terminal actually looks ok i.e. not corroded that much, although the connector wasn't quite on fully.
Took it off and pushed on all the way and tried starting. Seems exactly the same though.

There is a brand new starter on Ebay for £40. Maybe at that price I should just go for it, looks a reet pain to change though.

Well, the solenoid clicks every time.
Sometimes the starter begins whizzing and then stops.
Most times it takes 5-6 solenoid clicks before it starts.

If the solenoid closes ok, wouldn't that suggest that the circuitry is ok up to the starter?
Unless of course the supply is sufficient to close the solenoid but not to drive the starter I guess.

[Edit]
Actually I didn't check the feed connection from the battery - will do that next.

If the solenoid is clicking every time then it is likely the contacts in the starter are past there best.
